[Mk2] [Turbo] Speedo & Head Question - Please read/help

Post by UniSol »

The story so far:

180KPH Converted to 180MPH
El-Glo Dials reading 180MPH Installed
Odometer stop clocking up the miles
Toyota diagnose faulty head and replace with 160MPH head
My speedo head and dials now don't match up (it reads slower than I'm going)
Toyota refuse and explain they can't source and 180KPM head and replace
Toyota try a UK gearbox sensor, no joy
I'm very annoyed!

Does having a 160MPH head in effect my GT-S Turbo performance?
Can anyone make a chip that will make my 160 head use 180 instead?
Does anyone sell/supply 180KPM heads zero'd/new?

Only other option is to buy a new dial from El-Glo, but they're not cheap.

Help and advice would be much appreciated.

Hi,

What revision is your car? Guessing a Rev1 due to the gearbox sensor? Or did Toyota manage to get that wrong?

Sounds like all you need is a new JDM speedo, how they expected the 160mph clocks to ever work is beyond me....

Get a clock from a scrapyard or one of the affiliates on here and try that and then demand your money back from Toyota.

I don't think the 160mph clocks are ever going to work as the spacing is completely different on the face, whereas the 180kmh clocks can easily be converted as the only thing that changes is the needle moves 1.6 times slower for MPH.

A UK speedo will read correctly if connected to a JMD car. ON both UK and JDM cars, the cable makes the same number of revs per turn of the road wheel. The calibration is all done in the speedo head. If you have a rev 1 and the original speedo was converted by the addition of a gearbox converter, then you add a UK speedo the speed will be out by a factor of 8:5. You need to remove the original converter if you fit a UK speedo.

Maybe it's a rev2+ as he states that it's a GTS and Rev1 turbos were all GTs. Rev2 onwards don't use a cable.

Really wish people would at least put the model and revision of their car in the garage...

I have one of the first Revision 3s, December 17 1993 I think. Does that change your opinions?

Hi,

Sounds like all you need is a JDM 180kph speedo unit. You could try one of the affiliates on this board, such as Sports Toyota Breakers.

Even if it's an electronic speedo, if there's a converter in there a UK speedo will read wrong. You either need to get rid of the converter or fit a JDM speedo with a 180mph face.

They threw the convertor out also.

There is only a 160MPH head and 180MPH dials.

So I either need a 180KPH head and convertor or custom convertor.
