Would be great if he brings that to JAE! I'm sure it would be the best Mk1 there and win some prizes :)

When I first saw it I couldn't believe the effort and expense that had gone into that job. To be honest it didn't make a lot of sense spending all that money.
Then at the weekend I was looking through MR2only and found out the reasons behind it. If you don't know the car is being restored as a memorial to an retired lady who died tragically in a house fire. It was her car and if I remember correctly had owned it for 12 years and been very proud of it all that time. Her daughter and son and law felt this would be a fitting way to honour the memory of there loss.
Now I know this I have a GREAT deal of respect and admiration for what they have done and the reasons behind it.
It looks like its going to be one of the best, but if I ever get to see it will try and appreciate the reasons behind it.

It's useful to see pics of the car stripped out, but can't really understand why people are creaming themselves saying "great job" etc... it's just some bloke paying professionals to do to the restoration :|

Be nice when it's finished like.

It is still a great job even though the guy hasn't done it himself. I restore Bugattis as my profession and the customers of all restorations take a great amount of interest whilst the restoration is ongoing. He has obviously got it restored out of love and pride in what his mum had. Just because he didn't do it himself doesn't mean anything. My 2 cents. :D

Can't argue with that - nothing against the guy, I just thought the responses were a bit OTT considering nobody's asked whose doing the work that's all.

Hope he manages to find somewhere decent to keep it.

As your in the business...how much do you think it's going to stand him once it's finished?

Depends really the cars we do are valued at quite a bit more than mr2's so I can't really give prices but I'd say a full strip, engine rebuild, spray job etc he would be looking at upwards of £7,000 by a reputable business.

way too much effort to simply put it back to standard "showroom spec" IMO. fair enough on vintage Ferrari's, or classic race cars, but on a Toyota MR2? its a great car for what it is, and for the money it costs. but its by no means a supercar, or even a particularly fast car in the grand scheme of things, and for all its good points there are as many areas for improvement. with that much effort you could make the car so much better, i could never put that much work into making the car standard!!

that either makes it a pointless project, or makes the guys work even more impressive given the rather pointless outcome, depending on the angle you look at it from lol

Why not leave the cost its rarity, or its value after the restoration is complete to the owners concerned. If you read the thread the car means a lot to them; it was nice of them to share that with fellow enthusiasts.

Thanks Mistermk1, just curious!

Nothing unusual about someone spending more money on something than it's market value for sentimental reasons. Not everything is measured in pounds, shillings and pence.

It's quite a resto. I've read about it on another forum as well... if I remember correctly the owner said something about the cost being estimated as being in five figures.
Get this: many new parts, pretty much all coming from Toyota.

I've got real respect for the guy - sure he's not doing it himself, but in order to pay for it, it's still a project of its own... He's very brave for doing that in my books and good for him... It's money he'll probably never see back but that's obviously not the point behind the resto.

Lovely restoration on that car & i dont think he even cares about what it costs to do anyway its in memory of a lost loved one & you cant put a price on that, i think we are all guilty of spending more on our cars than they are truely worth ( i know i am !! ) but who cares if it makes you happy :thumleft: . Shame he didnt spray the inside of the engine lid due to the original stickers being there, if he'd looked on the net more closely i can do a full set of new stickers for the entire car :-k... nice job thought. Hi everyone. Just caught up with this thread after sorting my life out. Thanks for all the nice comments - I still have the car and have put a compilation of photos of the restoration up on YouTube. If you have a spare 5 minutes please check it out.

Here's a couple of photos that I took just after I got it back and had spent a day waxing it.
