[Mk2] [Turbo] Wheels loose 9 o clock to 3 o clock KNOCKING NOISE

Post by djskylineuk »

Hey guys as topic says my wheel is loose front near side, about 9-3 o clock wobbles alot and when going over bumps and a bumpy rd starts making a horrible knocking noise as if the wheels not on properly?

i don't thinks it's the wheel bearing because there is no play 12-6 0 clock and the wheel doesn't whine when you turn it by hand?

Where could the noise be comming from? I know theres alot of parts of the suspension, bearing etc? But is there any checks i can do to determine the exact cause of the noise? i also took a pic of what seems to be the Steering colum which seems to be leaking grease?

That's the track rod end, and most certainly shouldn't be leaking grease!!

Purchase and fit a new one, should be around the £15-£20 mark at a guess, and only an hours work at most to fit (search for the fitting, someone wrote a really good article on it not too long ago).

Side to side movement is 99% indicative of play in the steering system. As you said, the wheel bearing should be fine as the was no play in the verticle plain.

hth :)

thats the outer track rod end which is leaking grease ,but they rareley cause any room however ity will be an mot fail now so will need replacing , they are fairly pricey aswell £50 ish

i would guess at the inner track rod ball joint having play (£20).also check the steering rack gaiter for splits as this causes the inner joint to go rusty causing the play

you will also need to have the tracking done aswell once new track rod end is fitted roghly about £25-£40 for tracking, depending on where you get it done.
