Tubular exhaust manifold.

Post by Stuart Davidson »

Has anyone fitted one of these to their mk1? I'm just getting my car back on the road and have one that I bought from the u/s a while ago.It certainly looks nice, but just wondered if it will make any real difference? It would be with a magnex back box.Don't know what make it is, but may be hks? Thanks.

We have an equal length header on our SC and with the S/Steel exhaust system the car sounds awesome under load (almost like a spitfire)

I have also recently bought Chris (Limey's) blue HKS (?) Manifold to put on the N/A. Can only make it better me thinks

standard manifold is extremely good, and won't offer much of a restriction up to around 170bhp I thought.

Greddy.

Not sure about performance gains with these, may be a couple of ponies.

Get some relective insulation gubbins for the starter motor and shift cables as well. I have some of the bits I fitted if you want me to chuck them in the post for you.

How did it sound on the car?

I had a Greddy one on my Mk2 N/A, it was a few years ago now, but I still remember the awesome mid range roar it used to give

Cheers Chris :thumleft:

Let me know how much

How necessary is it? The standard system gets just as hot, is protected by heatshields. But there's no extra bits on the starter/shift cables?

Our SC's manifold is not wrapped nor is there any other reflective heatshields elsewhere. Something we need to remedy me thinks

 It's only a couple of bits of reflective cloth one which I stuck over the heat shield on the starter (belt & braces  ) and the other I wrapped round one of the cables which is very close to the manifold IIRC. I did end up knocking up a bracket to move the cable away from the manifold, I'll chuck that in as well (forgot to bring it up with me #-o ).

PM me your address (again  ) and I'll send them up.

can be good to 200bhp+ in some cases. indeed it is a very good design, especially for a cast iron affair

Since fitting my stainless manifold, my MR sounds like an absolute beast when under load. I would reccommend having one just for the sound!!! :D they look good too...

The only ones I have seen on ebay recently are turbo manifolds designed for Corollas. They won't fit the AW11 without modifying the firewall. I'm not convinced of the quality either...

I have tried searching for a similar manifold to the one that is on our SC and the Greddy one I bought from chris, but can't find anything...

Mine's an OBX stainless mainifold for an N/A corrola, i got it from the USA on ebay for about £150 including shipping. it's got an O2 sensor port on it too, which you can add an air/fuel sensor into or bung it up.

I've been told by the garage who originally worked on the engine before I bought the car that the standard exhaust manifold is quite restrictive once you get into about 170bhp plus region. I'd have to disagree with it being a good design anyway - if it was a good design they wouldn't all crack on number 4
