[Mk2] [Turbo] Im stumped, car starts but then cuts out, read on...

Right guys Im going to try adn keep thsi as short as possible but theres alot to say.

My car is currently at a garage where it has had some work done ie the following..

(1) turbo taken off and sent to turbotechnics for rebuild then refitted
(2) some gaskets replacing
(3) Hose from hell replaced
(4) SAFC taken off the car.

It originally went in for a coolant leak problem but this was fixed when the gaskets were replaced.

Now with everything back on the car starts with the key turn in ignition but then splutters and the cuts out. Occasionally it will run on tickover for 5-10seconds then die again.
The only way to stop the car from stalling is to keep the revs up abouve 1500rpm. But when doing this there is unburnt fuel and a fair bit of smoke coming from the exhaust.
It was flashing a code 43, but this has now cleared and there is no codes flashing.
A friend who knows his stuff has checked all of the following...

(1) spark plugs
(2) HT leads
(3) AFM
(4) Ignition wiring from ecu to front of car
(5) O2 sensor

We have even changed the ecu for another and swapped the MAt sensor but to no availe. I have hit a wall and dont know where to go now....only choice I can see is to take it to somewhere like Rogue?

Oh and as well as all the above the car has 4 studs from manifold to head than need helicoiling!!!
I am at my wits end the car has been off the road for months now!

Any ideas??

We didnt do that mate as the timing shouldnt of been touched at all ??

Didnt think of that at the time though to be honest, jsut seems strange its doing it all of a sudden and to such a degree!

as well as the rough running and the fuel, it is also running on 3 cylnders and occasionally 4 lol

you have a air leak from the turbo to the inlet manafold. at somepoint.

Check oil cap and make sure it tight , check all breather hoses to the turbo induction hose, no splits in the IC pipe work or loos clamps.

Surely an air leak would result in a lean condition at idle - not excess unburnt fuel in the exhaust.

I think the key clue is "SAFC taken off the car'
Double / tripple check you wiring - I think you've gone wrong here somewhere - or the AFM has a problem (I know you say you've checked it)

agree .if the pim signal wire which was broken to fit the safc has not been reconnected correctly then the ecu will go to 100% duty on the injectors as it does not know the correct amount so does its best to save the engine

yeh i forgot about the PIM wire, i can gaurntee it is that mate i never thought about that, exactly the same thing happened when i disconected the emanage from ians car

with a Stock car with AFM, if you have a leak it behaves just as you described. will run if you keep the gas on, but try and idle it and it will cough and die.

yes mate i see what ure saying. but its deffo no air leak, even if it had an air leak you could get it to run (depending on leak size) but it wouldnt run as bad as it is

i.e injectors running about 100% duty and running on 3 odd clynders (way over fueling)

all points to the PIM wire to me deffo no air leak

well guys everything was checked today,wiring all sorted,only thing connected to the pim was the fcd,even disconnected that incase it was faulty! fitted new plugs,different leads,afm,but the problem is still there!

when code 43 was up,all the tests where done,sta signal from ecu to ignition has been checked and is fine,even tried another ecu! and its still the same.

car has no error codes now at all.
im suspicious that something like the rotor/coil/ignitor could be breaking down?

symptons......car can ocasionaly fire up with no problems,idles ok etc,then all of a sudden starts miss firing badly,and plumes white smoke out the exhaust stinking of fuel!

any more ideas guys?

hes sold it mate,hence why it got removed,
yeh the white smoke is unburnt fuel when it starts missfiring,when it decides to run ok its fine,its a strange one for sure!

jeasus, so it aint really white smoke, its white vapour thats alot of fuel, normally it would sort of burn and go black

stinks of fuel! have to leave the building it thats bad!
