[Mk2] [Turbo] nuclear explotions on quick gear changes....?

Post by jimGTS »

when going for a run, occasionally, if im giving it proper beans and changing gears really quickly and plant the foot on the loud pedal, sometimes i get a massive, quite violent explotion/pop/bang from the exhaust.....
not just your average bang and pop from such a setup like downpipe/free flowing exhaust....
but realyl quite a shock wave type explotion.

just wondered if anyone else gets this?

its quite worrying when it happens! and ONLY ever happens on extreme gear changes...

probally just a little bit of excessive over fueling, especially if it isnt yet setup, as you say its going in for mapping.

I'll put forward my theory:

Pretty much all MR2's seem to dump quite a lot of fuel into the engine during a gear change when driving 'hard' - usually giving a puff of black smoke, but occasionally flames. I THINK this extra fuel is thrown in during the instant you come off boost. If you're changing quickly, I guess your sending extremely hot gases straight down the exhaust right behind the unburned fuel from the gearchange, possibly igniting it earlier than usual (i.e. when you just get some flames from the exhaust).

Or, I could just be a bit drunk...
