I'll put forward my theory:

Pretty much all MR2's seem to dump quite a lot of fuel into the engine during a gear change when driving

'hard'

- usually giving a puff of black smoke, but occasionally flames.

I THINK this extra fuel is thrown in during the instant you come off boost.

If you're changing quickly, I guess your sending extremely hot gases straight down the exhaust right behind the unburned fuel from the gearchange, possibly igniting it earlier than usual

(i.e.

when you just get some flames from the exhaust).

Or, I could just be a bit drunk.
