[Mk2] [Generic] How do I tell if my speedo is electric or mechanical?

.... Without taking the dash cluster apart? Its a Rev2 I think?) on a J plate.

Any ideas, peeps? Want to buy one of the speedo convertors, but can only find electric ones.

you could always look for the cable at the gearbox end!

Or post the part number on your engine ECU and I'll look it up on the epc

for the most part rev1 is cable driven...rev2 and onwards were electric

find an empty section on a quiet road and dip the clutch turn off the ignition. If the speedo drops to zero = electric speedo

The speedo on my REV 4 jumps briefly when the ignition is turned on, which I guess means its electronic. Whereas my old REV2 didn't jump at all, which I guess was cable.

I'm pretty sure it was only rev 1s that were cable driven. My Rev 3 doesn't "jump" and it's definitely electronic, so I'd guess it was something else causing that.

If you're planning on buying from Twos'r'us, you could PM "Stef Derner". He makes those delimiters and probably knows more about speedos than anyone else.

Just had the instrument cluster out on my rev 2 and the spedo is electric its also a J reg 1992. hope that helps
