[Mk2] [Turbo] Over fuelling & higher than normal fuel consumption

Post by Ed »

My car runs fine as far as idling a general responsiveness of the engine is concerned, however the exhaust is popping and banging more than it used to which leads me to think the car is overfuelling more than it used to on the over run. The other thing is that my fuel consumption has gone up. Doing my usual commute to work of 8 miles there and back I would usually get somewhere around 200 - 230 miles from a tank, now I'm bairly seeing 200.

Am I right in thinking that this is most likely caused by the Green ECU Temp sensor failing, or on it's way out. If so what is the part number for this sensor?

The only part number I can find is:

Part No: 89422-20010 SW20
Dec-89 Nov-93 To SW20 - 0087385
Sensor, water temperature (for EFI)

This however appears to be for the Rev2. Is there any difference between the sensor for the Rev 2 & 3?

If not the sensor then what else is likely to be causing these symptoms?

Cheers

Ed

green temp sensor stops working once the car comes off cold start map so not really gonna be that. I'd suspect the o2 sensor as it's this that controls fuelling once warm.

Have you checked for error codes too? It may come up with something if it's running silly rich

I got a chance to check the engine over today.

There are no error codes stored. I did hook up a digital voltmeter to see if the oxygen sensor was knackered.

The BGB says to hook it upto E1 and VF1 and that it should read 0 volts when the engine is warm and running at 2500 RPM.

On mine it reads between 0.09 and 0.1 volts, now is this negligable or when it says 0 volts should it be dead 0 in which case I need to replace the sensor.

I also hooked the meter upto E1 and TE1 and reved to 2500 RPM to check the fluctuations however there wasn't much of a fluctuation, something like 0.1 - 0.5 volts and it fluctuated quite a bit.

Any help much appreciated.

yes but if the temp sensor is is duff then the car will constantly think its cold and be throwing fuel in by the bucket full!

I'd start with the temp sensor
