[Mk2] [NA] Have I killed it ?

Post by Barney »

Hello

I was drivin home in my Rev 1 tonight, normally, and then all of a sudden 4 of the warning lights came on...engine bay cooling fan, malfunction light, low oil and battery light.

They flashed off and then all came back on at the same time. Now all on permenantly.

Stopped checked levels etc, oil a bit low but wasnt overheating and doesnt sound rough.

What the bleeding hell does this mean ? Should I go see Mr T ? Does it sound terminal ? Just had oil change and did a 500 mile weekend.

Thanks

Best thing to do, is have a gander for any leaks, unplug the battery for 1/2hr, do all the vital checks, and see what happens. check some fuses etc too

This can also be an indication that the alternator is on it's way out iirc, although I'm not sure what 4 warning lights come on for that!!!

If the car is running fine its probably just the alternator. All kind of lights can come up.

Should get 14v with a volt meter and the engine running.

Yep - good work the friendly man at Lucas has diagnosed as the alternator...booked in for replacement next week...

Not sure if I am relieved or not.

Any ideas on costs ?

Thanks

I'd be relieved if I were you  One way or another, it'll be cheaper than an engine rebuild, surely ;)

Re-con alternator shouldn't be more than £100-£150 at the very most I'd imagine. Fitted is a slightly different matter though as they're a bit of a pain to fit.
