Final Tune Complete - 501.6hp

Post by ^Trickster^ »

Went back down to Thor today to have a final tune done on my engine since making a few changes since septembers tune.

It ran out of fuel and started going lean, so maybe this is not the final tune, next year i may look at changing some more things as there seems to be more power to be made, I intended to have it tuned to 1.7bar, but we only got to 1.5bar.

So 501.6hp for you flywheel fans using a 18% rule.

But the actual measured readings from the hubs were:

425.1HP @ 7580rpm
323.4Ft/Lb @ 5886rpm

This was on pump fuel at 1.5bar. TD06 turbo, built engine, cams, usual forged/arp, custome intake setup, 850s etc etc Thinking the walbro was the resitriction.

Thor were once again awesome in everyway, they are highly experienced and trustworthy people and I am once again over the moon with the way they handled the car and communication with myself over this project.

Nod tuned the car today and I would like to say a big thanks to him and Pete.

WOW

that is seriously impressive stuff.

another 500+ bhp 2 but at lower boost than the others ive seen which dont need to be revved the nuts off to get the turbo spooling.

very very nice

Well done mate, didn't know the TD06 was capable of that much.

I've approved the dyno listing for you. 8)

Haha yeh I think we have all had enough of hub/wheel/fly debates.

Thanks for the replies, I have tried to build this engine the most efficient way possible, I dont see the point in buying larger more expensive turbos when I can fit one just right for the job. But the TD06 has gone past my expectations this time.

Edit: Cheers Mark :D

No probs mate.

Thought the TD06 was only rated to 400fwhp at 24psi, so that is one hell of an achievement there. :D

I have seen them do over 400WHP on a 2.2 platform. But not on a 2.0

They start to go inefficient after 1.6-1.7bar, but i didnt even get that far today.

I was more than certain I could hit 400, really pleased with the outcome, And the HP not peaking over makes me want to rev the motor higher.

Must admit I have a thing for the TD06, and stopped myself going for a larger turbo ages ago and decided this was what I wanted to work with.

Can you rev it any higher?

What does it rev to now?

I was going to take it to 7800, but due to the fuelling high up i think the limiter is set to 7600. Stock engines can be taken to 8k, but in my opinion, revs are a dangerous area.

So yeh I could take it higher, but only at lower boost where it wouldnt be as effective as lower revs with higher boost. Its a nice balance at the moment.

Mine is set to 7500, but it tails off just below that anyway.

Graeme,

top results there mate.

Really impressive. Glad it's come to gether. Are you not worried of pushing the turbo too much?

Thanks

The turbo is not really working that hard, its only 1.5bar, but at the end of the day, unlike the garrett ball bearing series turbos where you have to replace the entire CHRA when the seals/bearings go the TD06 has a nice 80 pounds rebuild kit :)

I think they are a greatly underestimated turbo, I have owned this one for 2 years now and it has seen my original engine, then my first built which popped a con rod bolt on the strip, and now this one.

Its always ran at least 17psi, it must of done 10k miles now too

Good stuff Graeme. What was the cause of the boost creep issues you were having then?

Nice area under the curve there :)

Thats 3 x 500BHP+ cars within a month.

Awesome stuff!!!

Hey mate, hows it going?

The boost creep was the boost controller hooked up ar$e first! But this was not noticed due to the fact that the old wastegate adaptor setup i used caused creep with no controller attatched, so it threw me off, but all sorted now!

Really pleased with the torque, picks up 200ft/lb at about 3750

Great result mate.

The 501bhp fly was that from the dyno result or just adding 18% from your hub figure?

Remember 18% is an estermate from wheel to fly, hubs will be conciderably less because of now wheels and tyres.

Only ask as transmission loses with wheels are around 40bhp and are absolute not a percentage so gives you 460bhp flywheel if taken from the wheels, hubs would be around 430/440bhp estermate.

Not trying to take anything away from you as its a very good result, just think we should be accurate in our comparisons because i'll be very interested to compair these to a GT range turbo. Still one of the best td06 results i've seen so can't express i'm not trying to undermine your efforts enough. :)

Very impressive!

whats your fueling like at top end? i noticed a dip in the climb of power which matches the torque dip as well.

Was this where you said about your walbro being a restiction? or other issue?

It doesn't dip like a VE's Limit or cams reaching there peak so looks like there is more to come mate :D

I meant to add:

Th epower is 425 hub.

So I'm guessing the 40hp comes down? It's usually 40hp ontop of wheels.

sorry but who gives a f*ck what it is at the wheels / flywheel etc.

most of the big boys on here now are listed with hub figures, he just got 425 at the hubs which is a great acheivement with the mighty TD06, just gives me a target to aim for with my final tune in january :D

I think the sales of TD06 turbos is about to explode :)

Graeme i want to pick you brains about something when you have a minute, i'll drop you a pm unless trickster tuning has gone all secretive as well  :D

anyway i think your calcs are a bit off :)

seeing as you start with flywheel power and the 18% is a loss that would give you 501 - 18% = 411 bhp

so therefore if you have 425 that would give you 518bhp as 518 - 18% = 425 :D

well done
