I'm thinking of doing something a bit naughty with an exhaust system that will probably be about 4-5 foot long and come out of the drivers side air vent a bit like jeffery's (extreme boost jobbie).....
Iv'e spoken to my local M.O.T station and he says it will be pass as long as when the vehicle is stationary no one can burn them selves on the tip. (he suggested that it sat flush with the air vent )
However the only thing that bothers me is the myth about if turbo cars need back pressure or not??? obvously this type of exhaust would have no back pressure what so ever so do peole think I would gain or lose HP/torque..........What do people think.... YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE!!!

Re: exhaust designs...do turbo's require any back pressure..??
Interesting thought. Technically no a turbo doesnt require any back pressure.
im assuming that there is going to be no silencing either, the car will be ridiculously loud aswell.
I would also think about the tip of the exhaust causing damage to the plastic/fibreglass vents depending on what you've got?

Re: exhaust designs...do turbo's require any back pressure..??
I certainly wouldn't want to get anywhere near it! I prefer my ears *not* to bleed
Re: exhaust designs...do turbo's require any back pressure..??
No back pressure = faster spool up of the turbo
Regarding the what the MOT centre told you, this is true. But if you plan to run without boxes in the system you will fail the emissions along with sound limits !

Re: exhaust designs...do turbo's require any back pressure..??
The ct series turbo will start to leak oil @ seals as the lack of back pressure causes more wear on the seals.
Re: exhaust designs...do turbo's require any back pressure..??
Thanks for the reply guys..... =D>
Right my idea is to go 3" out of the turbo into a small Carbon/titanium silencer (flea bay jobby or similar) and have the tip sitting flush with the air vent....
The middle bar of the air vent will be cut out and the remaining part on the inside lined with aluminium and then bent round and riveted to the outside to make a small kind of heatsheild....
What you reckon guys?...should I Give it a go? ...would have to source a suitable back box and stuff first (any ideas..?)
I wander what it would sound like....????

i say go for it, although get a silencer in there or you'll end up just having to whip it back of once the inevitable happens (police stop you)

ars3 didnt realise you could fail on sound emmisions!!! just fitted the loudest zorst iv ever heard!!

ees good eees nice yip love it
dangerous davo youre the man
only thing dont cut corners on components refernce flee bay carbon
device go lasting quality quality bits as you do any roads.
can you go 4" off from the turbo, usual fiiting to turbo with blown
4" system,maybe?

Speak to hicks off here,.. he runs with no siliencers..... i think it sounds great, and not as loud as you'd think.

Thats weird you know.... my Nur spec got a reading of 109db and I've only been pulled once in 5 years (and was drivind like a d1ck and did'nt see the copper ..... I can't imagine a side mount being that much louder than say a buddy club (or a similar un silenced 3" exhaust..)
How much louder do people think a side mount will be than say a mark edwards 3" buddy club exhaust.....its only the length that will be shorter in mine..Hmmmm
Re: exhaust designs...do turbo's require any back pressure..??
Whatever turbo you use it will leak oil if you dont have any backpressure. Besides, what gains are you expecting? A 3" downpipe and a good exhaust system wont be much worse than a straight exit.

Nor really much point as the exhaust will be that short any way plus my turbo outlet is 3" out of the exhaust housing so i'll just come straight out of turbo via the topmount manfold...down over the coolent pipe or what ever it is and out of the air vent.......BOOOOOMMM!!!!! FLAME ON !!!!

Just wanted to do something different .....and free up some more weight (Nur spec weighs loads) and with all the space at the back would leave room for a chuffing great carbon diffuser....

It's not different if it's been done though.
Boot/rear bumper exit would be different or even engine lid exit.......

Re: exhaust designs...do turbo's require any back pressure..??
my mates rev2 geos..turbo,downpipe catted gut...its loud but not as loud as u would expect
Re: exhaust designs...do turbo's require any back pressure..??
The myth that turbo's don't need back pressure is in fact wrong, turbo's do require some back pressure. Usually the stock exhaust system provides to much as it is a compromise between sound, economy and power.
As already mentioned the gains would be quite little anyway, your probably better of buying a well designed exhaust system or getting one custom made.

Nitera has a lovely side exit with a silencer on it. Speak to him.
