Why can't my tubby do hoops?

Post by skytek »

I used to hoop my old uk na rev2 the odd time in a wet car park and despite not having lsd it was brilliant for figure 8s and general hooping, but my tubby just will not hoop at all. I can just about get wide circles out of it and even then it tries to go straight. Is it a lack of front grip and will changing my wheels to wider ones with better tyres (which I plan to do soon) sort it? Or could it be anything to do with my dying (prety much dead) shocks?

Any ideas from you hooping experts?

Cheers.

Yea we call them hoops over here lol. the wheels spin plenty but I can swing her round properly, she just wants to go straight or do very very wide hoops. I think it feels like the front is slipping too much and the power just pushes me forward instead of hooping her round.

The old car was excellent at it

Is it an LSD gearbox? I guess i'm asking if you're spinning up both rears or just one.

Crappy front tyres?

If the fronts pushing wide there's a grip balance issue for sure. As i'm sure you know, none lsd cars are that much harder do donut (your original posts states the NA had an lsd though you've now corrected yourself :))

Anyway, isn't your engine bu88ered? Should you really be hooping it at all :-k :-$ 8-[

weird no LSD must be an early rev1 box? How old was your n/a? all 1994 on cars have LSD n/a or turbo.

I'd have thought no LSD would be your problem

My understanding was it wasn't standard on NA's until rev5, and there's even rumours of early rev3 cars (94) not having LSDs.

Yea sorry I've just edited my original post as I'd left the "not" out.

Neither of my cars had lsd but the NA was still easy to hoop. The NA was a 1992 uk car and the tubby is a 1993 jap turbo. The engine is fine now apart from not being able to boost beyond 1bar, which is probably an actuator problem by the looks of it.

Hooping isn't important to me at all and I very rarely do it but it does seem odd that this car can't do it, and it would be nice to be able to have the option of a bit of fun once in a blue moon.

I think Jonb could be right in thinking it's a grip balance problem. I'm planning on getting new wheels soon with a better staggard setup of 245/225 rather than the 215/205 setup (with two different brands of front tyres) that came with the car.

LSD's were standard only from revision 4 on Turbos (although they were very common from revision 3 on) and only became optional on revision 5 n/a's. As yet, I haven't seen a stock n/a lsd, but I'd love one for my race car!
