There may be many reasons for your overheating so its hard to say.

Easiest to check are:

(1) coolant level, and bleed out air.

(2) expansion tank cap and tubes, check for splits cracks and that they are the right way around.

(3) Oil level

(4) Check radiator at front is getting hot/warm

(this rules out a permanently stuck thermo)

(5) Replace rad cap in engine bay

After that if everything is ok, check timing, and then possibly consider exploring the head gasket!
Running the engine in the temp

-red is not a good idea as this can lead to head warpage and ultimate head gasket issues.

My hunch is on 1 or 2 or 5 above.
