i simply refuse to use the normal 95 ron petrol for my tubby, its a PITA at the minute though as optimax seems to have ran out so shell supreme is what im being forced to use still 97 ron but i'll be happy when the new 100 ron fuel reaches my area in scotland. i beleive some of you folks down south already have it jammy sods!!

yeah the shell stocks of optimax round glasgow have been like hens teeth for a couple of weeks but I'll still search for SUL rather than use 95 stuff. Either that or park the car at home and use the bus lol

Exactly, not worth damaging the engine for.

FWIW, it was possible to run 95 RON on my old Rev2, whilst it was still fairly factory 'standard' running 10psi of boost.

But - you had to knock the timing back from 10 deg BTDC to 7 degBTDC fr 95 RON fuel to prevent detonation.

The side effect is that when the engine was cold, it would run really, really sluggishly - and you'd get lower MPG generally. Rev3-on cars with heated O2 sensors may not suffer so badly - but the risk of detonation and expensive engine damage is high.

I'd just put SU in and don't worry about it. You don't really expect a performance 220+ BHP sports car to be cheap to run, do you?

Hit the nail on the head with that comment.

My car ran on 95RON for seven years, it still seems to be running, enough so to pull 12s and trap 110mph without opening the motor up. However the knock control would knock back the timing slightly every now and again.

To be honest, I dont really take much notice of fuel prices. I need it so I just put the nozzle in and squeeze it till it stops, and pay. However, I now dont buy chocolate and magazines from the shops, to make up for the slightly higher fuel price.

Even if fuel cost were double what they are now, I'd still buy it as I dont have a choice.

But always use optimax or ultimate - I dont think the price difference between 95 and super is that much really, especially considering I seem to get better mileage from super.

The difference on 3p per litre is pretty neglibible.

When filing up 40 litres (£40). you would only pay an extra £1.20.

That will be offset against the MPG you get.

So if you put 20 quid of each. Im pretty confident that you would get more miles out for the Optimax!

Surprised noones mentioned the obvious.......................TESCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK OK OK, so it hasnt got all the detergents etc but it's 99ron and more stable than 95/97 ron so that has to be a good thing. Depending on where you live , the stuff is an absolute steal too.
