GS-D3 vs GS-D2 - not Starwars, Goodyear :wink:

Been readng up on these on an MG-F forum (!!) as my gf needs new tyres on her MGF. It appears there's some very negative feedback on the new eagle F1 GS-D3's, to the point where they say don't fit them period. Apparently all manner of handling problems especially if fitted only one axle at a time.

I know the MGF isn't exactly an MR2, but there are some inherant similarities, so has anyone else noticed any problems wirh the newer D3's over previous gen D2's. This would be for my 2 not the gf's MGF by the way...

Or should I just go with a more budget oriented Toyo (these are for my new wheels, 17" front, 18" rear, and the 18's kinda limit some choices if I want to keep a 215 front, 235 rear profile)

admittedly running tyres on just one axle does have it's limitations

Is it really that significant if there's a difference in tyre brands front to rear? I'd always worked that in a perfect world yes you always replace all 4 at once, or at least maintain tyre make and type all round, but that's not always possible (say a manufacturer withdraws or supercedes your current tyre model) and if you have to buy a different type then the impact would be minimal so long as you do replace the pair on the same axle at the same time...

Won't actually be an issue for me as I'll be buying new tyres all round so can easily get the same for each corner.

Looks like the GSD3 is only taboo to MGF owners though

ive got the older f1's on the front, and i'm not changing them just to have the same all round..
they have a good few thousand miles left in them... so i will probably be replacing them all in one go next time.

I've been running F1 GSD3's 215/40/17 & 245/35/17's since last feb/march havent noticed any problems with handling, excellent grip in the wet & dry - ok in the snow

still got quite abit of tread left after 12k of mostly motorway driving aswell

GSD3s are fine its only on track that they suffer. For roadwork they are pretty good though.

I ran a combination of GSD3s and SO3s on my old SC and it handled lovely.. was amazing in the wet round Spa, so i think you'll be okay.

I'm on my 4th set of GSD-3 , and they are fantastic on the road, don't think those MGF drivers know what they're on about!

Agreed on the quality and whilst it is nice to get a full set of boots at the same time it is more important to ensure that you change your tyres at minimum in pairs so that you always have the same make and type on each 'axle' otherwise you can induce braking problems, especially in the wet.

TBH, I do prefer the GSD2's for all round grip.. I believe it to be better.... but the longivity wasn't there - premature wear came round quickly... It seems the GSD3's are a harder wearing, longer lasting tyre

On the Mazda these are said to be the best tyre available, however people who have fitted them to their second car have not been so happy, apparently they are designed for small lightweight cars, they have a soft sidewall and suit low pressures, big heavy cars like the MR2 they don't suit as well especially on track, road they are supposed to be ok but SO2 /S03 or TR1s are supposed to be better.

that's interesting as the stuff I'd been reading suggested they did have a stiff sidewall and hence were well suited to lwt 2 seaters... Guess it's all relative though, and the stiffness is probably high versus regular lower speed rated tyres, but soft against high speed rating tyres from certain other manufacturers.

thats probably true about suiting light weight 2 seaters which would explain why they dont cope so well on a 2 on the track, the point being, at nearly 1300kgs, an mr2 turbo isnt really a lightweight 2 seater

LOL, true, the MR2 is getting a bit towards family hatch territory, certainly against an Elise or even a Mk1/Mk3 MR2 anyway...
