Post by Scott (T.O.A) »

hi,
as alot of you know im looking for a toyota mr2, i have recently been on the phone to a dealer who has a apparantly mint example of a GT sports mk2 for £1500. the only problem is it has 150,000 miles!! it does however have full service history most of it by toyota and has just flew through its MOT. apparantly everything is absolutly mint. just wanted to know how many miles are these engines good for?? is 150,000 too many miles?? anny input would be appriciated!

If its been looked after it should be fine as long as you look after it. mine is now at 262000km (about 162000miles) and still going strong.

I believe so, it had 154000 miles when i bought it, the last 8000 i have done have been a mix of motorway diving and normal around town driving.

They are strong engines and will last if looked after, similar with the n/a, if maintained and everything is kept in good working order these engines will just keep going. I believe there is someone in Oz with a n/a at about 400,000miles...

we talking about a na or turbo here??????
if its a turbo, then clearly at that price it has to be boarding on being a lemon/dog mate especially coming from a dealer, and unless you can read japanese, youve got no hope that it could possibly have full service history. it may well do, but you wont be able to confirm unless you have a japanese mate to read it all out for ya :)

NA (uk) however, being a uk car, sounds like a good deal, and at least you can read those history receipts, and for that money and milage its about the right price.

Personally as long as the car is look after it should be ok. Much depends on how long you want to keep the car i suppose.

My tubby has 74k on it, which i suppose aint too bad. However i am only doing about 6k per year so still plenty of life left in it for me.

However as we have spoke before my white t-bar only has 60k with cambelt change! and is only priced at £2250....sure i can not tempt you? Leather seats. full electrics etc, service history.

I also tend to pay alittle more to get a good car.

BTW - where did you see the car with 150k on it, was it accross mount pleasant by any chance - duno what the garage is called, near merry hill?

If you need a hand at what you are looking at as i am only close i will pop down with you to check it over if you like!

just do a compression test on it, if all the readings are ok then dont worry.

if it has a nice service history and things that wear out , like shocks/brakes/bushes then dont worry.

The shell will be fatigued though so some good bracing will stiffen her up a bit.

I bought Hyde bone-stock at 180,000 miles ... raced it for 4 seasons and made as much as 440 rwhp. We are now taking the engine out with 204,000 miles on it.

It all depends on how they were raken care of :)

Car needs to be cheap for that price though ! At the end of the day.. to a dealer, its an old car with big milage on it. Don't look to enthusiastic if you really want it !

On the other hand... there are plenty out there ! Things you have to think about with milage is worn suspension, worn bushes, worn steering joints, worn brake calipers... all these usually get tired with age and are quite expensive to change out.

You really shouldn't have a problem providing its been looked after. My NA has done 183,500 miles now of which just over 101,000 are mine :D

She just goes in to the garage when anything needs doing without any delay, costs a bit but certainly worth it.
