Stig

Post by Spidey »

I know this probably will never happen but I'd love to see someone offer up a modified 2 to Top Gear and see what the Stig can do around the track ?

Has top Gear ever approached an MR2 owner or IMOC approched Top Gear ?

One of their researchers had a 98 MR2 with a Rogue Turbo transplant....
Until some w@nker set fire to it.....

To be honest.... I suspect every car club in the UK has such a question posted somewhere - and they simply don't have the time / interest for it!!

Perhaps the subject of a Clarkson Video though..

I know for a fact the GTROC have offered some big power skylines without success, so I doubt a lickle MR2 would arouse much interest. :(

shame that was never on tv, cause he raced clarksons merc didnt he on the strip..........
beat him up to 80mph then the merc flew.......

surely this beating should have made clarson do a little feature on the cars....
then again, a week later every bu88er in the country might have an mr2.......

They did do a show where the MK1 raced a MK3 (i believe) down the drag stip, but not seen anything with a tuned MK2 in it yet.

Would be nice to see though what time it got round the track!

Maybe if ALL the main forums got together with an en-masse request - 1 top car from each forum as a representive. Could be a major shoot out feature... Afterall, if we're doing all the work for the researchers coming up with ideas for the show they're gonna love us

And if Top Gear dont wanna know, how about Tiff on 5th gear...

I thought someone on imoc worked at Top Gear Towers? or was that a long time ago now...?

Maybe they need another one of their "Buy a xxxx car for xxxx" features. But make it 5,000 to spend on a modified car and then complete the usual challenges...

I agree they've not really tried the 'buy a japanese import' on a budget market.

I personally doubt Top Gear would feature a modified car.. as they tend to class all of them as "barries" etc. Not enthusiasts.. besides its a car show for un-modified super cars etc. ie Porsche, Lambo, Ferrari with the ins and outs of what is new on the horizon.. rather than here's a 12 yrs old MR2 turbo.. lets see how quick it goes round the track!

Just wouldn't get the viewers in my eyes.. they may, however do cheap trackdays.. as most of the time that track can't be used! And I'm sure the BBC would like to make a bit more money on the side of our licence fees!

Could only have one car out at a time as the track is a figure-eight

I dunno - still has merit.

Just keep numbers low per day, with only 1 car at a time for lapping against a watch.

Maybe various legal issues to deal with of course...

If I am correct the Stig is an ex racer by the name of Perry Macarthy who has written a book about his racing career. I wonder if Top gear intend to keep him an enigma????

He was the original Stig. When the Stig died, and came back in angelic white, a new driver was in the suit. I'm 99% sure it's Ben Collins, a rather successful GT racer, ex-ASCAR, F3, Castle Combe race instructor.....

That would be a good idea - I think. But it's not what I or anyone on IMOC thinks.

Well, we all know a well prepped MR2 would show IMOC up well if it got the chance :D

Or...........a feature on tuning.

Get a bog standard MR2 and the fastest one off the club and compare times.
Then, the following week do the same for a skyline, then the same again a week after with an evo etc etc.

Order not important - that Im sure would get some interest as most people who don't drive lame cars (ie. runabouts) tune them in SOME way, even if only wheels. Therefore people could relate to it.

Plus....who can really afford a Zonda anyway???? I think some "realistic" cars would go down well......

Anyone?

That'd be great. I'm sure we'd all love it.

I dunno. IME, most under 25s tune their cars, whether they're runabouts or not. The odd ones out are those of us 25 and over who are still doing the modding thing. Boys and their toys, eh?

I'd agree, but then again, I like the exotica. It's dangerous though. I find myself more and more tempted by something with a Ferrari badge ... on the engine! If we want a TV show doing modified cars, then why don't we make one? Seriously! We need the following:

A group of cars - we should be OK here)
A place to meet - we could all chip in to rent a track for the day
A reviewing team - I'll volunteer ;)
A brace of camcorders - I suspect most of us have one
An editor - anyone?
Somewhere to broadcast the series - why not the Internet? We could PODcast the series with BitTorrent or whatever.

Thoughts?

Cheers,

you lads have been asking who the stig is, now i heard/read and be told that originally, due to tiffs conditions contract with channel 5 he wasent allowed to be seen on other car programs.

but he wanted to do his part and clarkson also wanted him because of their friends his confidence in his driving skills. because of this, he wore a helmet to cover his mush and they gave him a nick name. this turned out to be a big hit on the show and it progressed from there.

wether tiff is still the original stig is a question that can only be answered by tiff himself.

take this openley as i did. if some of you out there now a more "accurate" story of who he is please come forward!
