Its an engine bay temp sensor it controls the engine bay fan, or intercooler fan if you have a turbo.

The hole in your K&n filter is probably for an intake temperature sensor found on rev 3 engines.

If it's a 93 it could be a rev3.
Best way to tell is if there's an afm on the airfilter.
Rev3 airfiler goes direct to the turbo, rev 2 has the afm between.

Yours looks like a Rev2 from the photos.

Though not an ideal way to identify the Rev2 / Rev3+, the spoiler on the back of a Rev1 and Rev2 is spilt into three parts, one attached to the boot and two side parts attached to the body. The Rev3 and above have a single spoiler attached to the boot only.

Of course this can be changed, but it's unlikely someone would go from Rev3 to Rev2 spoiler (though my wife likes the Rev2 version!).

Rear lights are also round in shape, rather than square.

Though applying mainly to the turbo, the difference guide in:

http://www.btinternet.com/~netsurf/mr2t/mr2tfaq.html

applies to NA as well for body changes.

Rev1/2 spoiler is easily the best!

The sensor on the lid is not your intake temp sensor (which you'll probably want to connect to your K&N now it's winter). I presume it's a 57i kit you have on there. I have the same, check the pic in my gallery. There's no way the air intake temp sensor will stretch that far on the standard loom, you'll find it dangling somewhere underneath your K&N on quite a short lead, can actually prove quite illusive at a first glance, but if you get in there with a torch you should find it. It probably only has enough length on it to plug into the K&N if the hole on the filter is pointing directly downwards.

I believe the main task of the air intake sensor is to control the cold start injector. So might help if you having cold starting problems. If the sensor's not plugged in you'll get an error code from the ECU (although I forget which one, it's in the BGB).

G. :-)

P.S.
My engine is not the original one fitted to my car. :-)
