My Mrk 1: Work Log

Post by Ridge Racer »

so today i begin the task of restoring my mr2 mrk 1 '86 to its former glory

first off i went down the local and got myself some engine cleaning liquids

Image

as you can see... messsssyyyy

Image

Image

Image

managed to tidy it up moderatly but im still going todo more at a later date

also my exhuast which looked horrible

Image

Image

to my surprise they revealed stainless steel, are all mrk 1 exhuasts stainless steel? or is that an aftermaket exhuast???

and finally the wheels + tyres which when i got the car were very very ruff the tyres had faded and the wheels were clogged with tar & oily deposits

Image

Image

managed to get the tyres looking new with some tyre foam & the wheels were done also but they seem to be getting corroded now so a replacement is going to be necessary

in the coming months i will let you know how i get on with it in this thread as im sure you all know my story bought the car for 250 (bargain for her condition) the head gasket has gone on it so im looking out for a new block to put in her and get her working like new again

i hope :P

stock exhausts aren't stainless. Are you sure the whole exhaust system is stainless rather than just the tips being chromed?

Also get some decent tyres!!

For stock rims:
eagle F1s for road use only. Really good especially in wet. Don't take them on track though.

bridgestone RE720s a good budget alternative.

track tyre & road use- A539. mediocre grip but nice and progressive, my choice in my NA.

for 15s (195/50/15s):

F1s- again for road use only
SO3s - good for road and track
budget option- A539.

Uberswan option and quite frankly best road/track tyre since sliced bread:
Yoko Advan Neova (LTS- for elise S1) thes eworked fantastically well on my old SC.

Just had A539's fitted for £45 fully fitted from blackcircles.co.uk at the Volvo garage 2 mins away. I would agree with Laurens opinion of them being progressive, they take some getting used to, but are well worth it!

;)

Well they are the kind of tyre that shall we say, lets you enjoy the handling of the MK1, which is the whole point in my eyes. ;)

A539s are what I've got on my MK1 for trackday use too. Just beware damp / wet conditions - I've had the car out of shape a few times on damp roads - if you're used to a better road tyre, just wind back your expectations as to how much grip the A539s have in the wet.

K now I'm scared  I only have them on the front at the moment, Goodyear Eagle NCT2's on the rear atm. Oh well, as you say I'll have to wind back a bit!

I wouldn't be too worried about the Mk1 giving you any nasty suprises in the handling stakes TBH. It's important to have the best tyres on there you can afford but in the mean time as you drive it more I'm sure you'll get to grips with it and find out just how much feedback it provides.

I know you said you weren't looking to track it - but I'd suggest an investment in some track (airfield...) time would be a fun thing to do and may also help you grow more familiar with what the car does as it gets to the edge of adhesion.

Track days at disused airfields are great for pushing beyond the limits in comparative safety...
