Oil cooler kits ....

Post by Bender Unit »

Just wondered if anyone was after an Oil Cooler kit?

As I have a decent amount of time on my hand I was going to see if its possible to get one made up on the cheap and as a result maybe negotiate some sort of bulk buy discount for a IMOC GB.

If your interested drop you name down so I know what sort of numbers we are talking.

The kit would be a
13 row cooler
braided lines
thermostatic sandwich plate
mounting tabs so the oil cooler can be hung down at the back of the car (JDM style yo!) :D

I am thinking it can be done for about £150 or possibly less.

Would be worth while for any of the trackday set.

Cheers

Hi James, trying to get something sorted right now for a customer, been talking with think auto about making up this kit and a figure of about £300 has been mentioned, if you can sort something for £150 thats awsome, any chance you could get it done now?

lol, give me a day or so need to speak to my chappies at the local race track about how cheaply they can do the braided hosing. The rest should be easy enough. Have you done any measuring for lines etc? Just to save me crawling under the car with the tape measure. :D I am lazy like that :D

I was thinking from the oil filter, over the rear subframe and out to the rear grill with some P clips to keep the braided lines nice and tidy.

Have you thought about some radiator / cooler protection..... similar to the front rad protection you can get?

Also

Would your thermo plate have an adaptor for an oil temp guage?

Hi James

Keep me posted on this. I would definately be interested in this, although I might require a different sandwhich plate because of going the 5S route. I don't know whether fittment would be the same.

Ed I suspect the fitting ill be the same, most use 3/4 thread IIRC.

Trying to see if I can get the price as low as possible - it seems braided hose has got very expensive. The other option is Nitrile hose which although not braided is just as tough and durable.

Ok so this is what I have planned for the kit. I would be interested in peoples views.

Goodridge push on oil hose - basically a hardened hose, but not braided and its a bright blue colour. Capable of taking high pressure and temps (wont be needed but its nice to know). Very good hose and use alot on race cars etc.

13 row oil cooler

Push on fittings (hose secures onto these) basically the anodised blue / red stuff you see on race cars. These push on fittings and this hose are very strong and capable of holding silly pressures.

Termostatic sandwich plate - only flows oil to the cooler when the temps goes beyond a certain point which is good as you dont want to over cool your oil.

Prices are still being negtiated, but 150 seems unlikley (sadly) prices may be nearer the £200 mark. Its the fittings that drives the prices up. If people were happy for steel fittings then that would help cut some cost, however I personally like the alloy finishes and plus they dont corrode which the cheaper ones can do I have already ruled braided hose out as its so expensive at the moment and that just pushes the prices even higher plus I feel the Pushlock hose is actually nicer, just as tough and equally capable.

Opinions please?!

Ahhhhhhh p1$$ flaps I think I have just made a boo boo :(

The kit above is for the rev3 - due to the filter location on the Rev2 thats going to take more hose and a relocation kit. As IIRC the downpipe runs very close to the oil filter.

Ahh cack - sorry guys, I will get back to the drawing board!

Does anyone have a picture of the Rev 2 oil filter set up so I can work it out in my head? I have a cunning plan!

Cheers

 James if you use the depth of the oil filter as a guide to how deep the relocator can be there wont be to much difference will there? maybe a inch in it :thumleft:

This going to be my problem. I will need to relocate the oilf filter with the whole setup. I had planned on having the cooler in the side mount area where the intercooler would have been but there will likely be an exhaust can there instead so it will have to mount to the subframe or somewhere similar.

Be interesting to see what you come up with. Maybe I will be able to adapt it to my needs. We shall see. Keep up the good work.:)

Fonz,

Yeah the relocator for the Rev1/2 models wont be a problem - found a take off plate that will sit where the oil filter would normally sit and you can then kick the pipes out towards the IC end of the engine bay.

My idea would be to have the oil filter located around that area as there is quite alot spare, its difficult to work out when you cant do the measuring first hand :(

If your just after a oil relocator for the time being then that could be done quite easily. Its when you add a external cooler in that means it takes more hose etc.

Any idea how hot it can get under the manifold? The push on hose is rated to 150 degrees where beyond that under high pressure it could pop off - dont know if the manifold gets hotter than that?

Well once this has all be worked out it looks like we will have sorted a remote oil filter for the Rev1/2 and oil coolers for all models! :D

I shouldnt think any of the kit would be close enough to the manifold to reach 150 degrees, the heat is travelling up through the lid :-k i reckon it should be fine. Worth some others having input on this one though incase they experienced anything different. :-k

Well as a saftey measure I have found some wicked little clamps for this prupose - bit like Mikalor clamps just really small :D I dont think the pipe will melt but there have been reports of the hose coming loose under extreme heat. Hmmm :-k

that should work, looking at the water pipes that run under the manifold, given that they are wrapped perhaps that might be worth while just for a short stretch too :-k
