4AGZE Conversion

Hi all,

I am in the process of purchasing a complete 4AGZE clip, complete with ECU, loom etc etc

A few questions:

Do I need to upgrade the pump? I am sticking to the standard size SC pulley for now but I may upgrade in the future (finances a bit low at the moment).

I can easily have the N/A engine lid modified and I was going to design a vent that can be welded onto the existing lid for airflow to the IC.

But should I make an air duct from the fan/vent pod on the drivers side to the IC? This isn't a real bind either as this can be made at work.

Anything I should be aware about being installation?

You don't need to upgrade the pump, but you do need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator that will need setting up on a rolling road as the SC one is lower pressure on the return.

This is essential if you want to run a big pulley. You also need to block off the ABV. I had a new SC outlet pipe made doing away with it all together.

The engine lid needs to seal with the IC to get the best effect. An SC engine lid is the best way of course. Can look a bit crap if you modify an NA lid.

You can seal the intercooler off from the engine bay as I did here back in 2003 for my track car:

But unless you are going to do track days I wouldn't worry about it.

Is the engine out of an MR2 or AE92/AE101?

You just move the latch on the car, it's not actually that hard to do and simply requires a drill. I bought my SC lid from Toni too!

When I was running a 4A-GZE in the sprint car I found it ran fine on the standard fuel system (n/a pump, factory SC fuel rail/regulator etc.), I also used an n/a engine lid (although the internal webbing had been removed for weight reduction)

It runs fine but you won't make full power with a big pulley. I did have a later spec GZE mind but on the rollers it made 157bhp because of the fueling issue. Got it to 186bhp with an adjustable fuel pressure regulaotr.

Think it was 126 at the wheels. I am trying to remember from 2002 though!

With a big pulley on an early engine 180bhp at the fly is the best you can hope for really.

I collected the engine this morning.

Clocks say 102k kms so that's about 60k?

It's already got a big pulley on it so no need to buy one. I'll measure it tomorrow. It's got the air con compressor with it - can I remove this and run a different belt?

Also, was it standard for the intercooler to have a fan underneath it?

You can remove the aircon compressor, yes you will need a shorter belt.

It was not standard to have a fan under the intercooler and it's a crap modification in all honesty unless you are drag racing as above around 50mph it's more of a hinderance than a help.

Something I forgot to ask, the exhaust manifold, is tubular standard?

Instead of fitting an adjustable FPR, will an APEXI SAFC work just as well? I can adjust the fuelling per 1000rpms?

The exhaust manifold is the same as an NA with an addition of an oxy sensor.

You need to adjust the fuel pressure, so if the Apexi can give more fuelling, maybe, but either way you'll still want to set it up on the rollers. If you've got an aftermarket manifold that's another reason to put it on the rolling road.

Well, it's obviously an afermarket manifold, though not a pretty one!

Is there somewhere to put the oxygen sensor in that manifold or in the down pipe? Otherwise you'll need it cut into your exhaust system. I had to do this on mine.

Yes there is a hole at the bottom for that.

I'll be taking it off and comparing the bottom flange to the standard N/A manifold to ensure my exhaust downpipe will fit, so while it's off, i'll spruce it up a bit.

How do I adjust the position of the alternator? I'm trying to get to the last exhaust manifold bolt and I cannot get to it as the alternator is in the way...

You don't. If the alternator is in the way you'll need to loosen the belt and remove it.

Belt tension is adjusted via the tensioner pulley (Loosening the bolt in the center of the pulley allows it to move, then the pulley position is adjusted using the bolt from underneath)

Supercharger belt tension is adjusted in the same way although the adjuster bolt is accessed from above.

I actually cut the alternator belt off, as it's connected to the air con compressor which is being removed.

I'll loosen that nut
