On the hunt for a front and rear bumper to tidy up my Rev 2 UK (1992)
Paint code on the chassis plate states 3e5 red.
I am discounting any front and rear bumpers from Rev 3 cars as Its in my head although they are 3e5 red they are a later shade.
Unfortunately my thinking means I can never track down UK spec 1992-1993 Rev 2 bumpers.
So I guess what I am asking is, Are red Rev3 UK MR2s a different shade of red to Rev2 UK MR2s.
Thanks

Re: Shades of 3E5 Red...
There are only 2 reds for MK2s:
1. 3J6 Crimson (Rev1)
2. 3E5 Super Red (Rev 2+)
1. 3J6 Crimson (Rev1)
2. 3E5 Super Red (Rev 2+)

There are demonstrably 3 reds in the sw20, though I'm pretty sure this isn't on the marketing materials for them.
I believe these are:
Crimson Red (Rev 1)
Super Red 2 (Rev 2)
Super Red 3 (Rev 3+)
At the birthday bash last year you could clearly see three types of red sw20.
There is of course the issues of age and fade which affected red cars the most.
For example mine is a rev 2, which is quite different from Shinny's rev3, for example, both allegedly the same colour from the marketing info (which say both rev 1 and rev 2 are crimson red)
Interesting - the above is saying "year", not "rev". Still, mine is a 1992, rev2, which is different to a rev 1 and a rev 3.

Know what you mean though. My previous MR2 was 6M1, and it was a different shade to another 6M1 car.
Re: Shades of 3E5 Red...
My Mr2 has MANY shades of Red
Re: Shades of 3E5 Red...
3J6 is "Super Red III" aka "Crimson Red".
Is this thread about different paint codes or about the variable shades within those paint codes? Every paint has a pretty wide variation in within it's own "palette". I don't know if Toyota bothered purging the lines/guns between every job, so the industry hearsay I know suggests that variations are based on other colours contaminating the pure paint, but that there are probably many factors affecting it when new. Old cellulose red paints oxidise and therefore all red MR2s will have faded considerably, and the smart people will tell you that a touch up job will never be 100% matched to your faded, weathered paint.
The colour charts you see are for US market cars. I don't know if they are applicable to Japanese or UK market cars. AFAIK Rev 2 cars could come as either 3J6 or 3E5 depending on the year. gavsdavs car is the only 3J6 I have seen up close. It's darker than 3E5 - but check out Andy's TRD 0001 because Patrick Chambers painted that 3E5 but that looks very dark when you park it next to a factory 3E5 paint job, even taking into account the fade, so perhaps there is a greater variation than I thought.
Can someone mythbust my post please? I am just being a forum nerd saying words.
If I ever got a respray I'd be tempted to go 3H4 Medium Red Pearl. Mmmmmm. Not an MR2 colour but Toyota and contemporary.

Haha, I know that feeling...
Thanks for the info people, I think i'll stick to trying to find one from the same car as I've just had some inspection panels delivered from a stock Rev3 and its definitely more vibrant than my red.

Mine is (by the above chart) supposed to be a 3J6 crimson red (it's a JDM, early 1992 car), but it's actually closer to a 3E5 super red.
At the birthday bash in warwick there were clearly three different reds present though I can't find an example of all three colours on tinternet from here.
Early rev1 cars - Crimson - almost a burgundy red
rev 2 cars like mine - it's not like some of the earlier cars.
later rev3/4/5 cars like yours and shinnys.
Mine's been painted at various points in life but (I think) fairly faithfully. The plastics also age/discolour differently to the metals.
Closer to super red than crimson red:

What colour is on your VIN plate? Yours looks like 3E5 to me. Defo not 3J6.
Either that or it was 3J6 and it's been fully resprayed in 3E5. my first MR2 was 3J6 and it was a LOT darker than your car.

I will have a look on the VIN plate.

Pretty sure it's not been resprayed - it was very pink when i first got it as it came in the country (1999) and had it clay bar-ed and that's how it came out.
As I was saying - there really are 3 different reds out there

Yep, 3J6, 3E5 and faded

Ok, were you at the birthday party in Warwick ? Have you had a look for any of the photos ? (lots of FB, some on here but none of the 3J6 rev1s are visible). There were lots of cars there, some clearly faded, but mostly in very good shape. There were 3 different reds.

Nope, wasn't there. However, there are only 2 colour codes for MR2 SW20 red. That being Crimson 3J6 and Super Red 3E5. A lot of cars could have been repainted in matched/slightly different 3J6/3E5, different red altogether.
I'm not trying to be funny, but there is only two colour codes for SW20 Red.

Whatever it may be that is one lovely looking mr2... People spend thousands trying to make them look better when all they really need to do is just clean them and leave them alone!

And in keeping all things 'if it wasn't in the good ol' US of A it didn't happen' theme - nice to see that SW's only exist between 1991 and 1995.
Thats a real minefield when you order stuff for your 1989 or 1990 MR2 from 'merca...
Re: Shades of 3E5 Red...
Just order stuff for a 1991 model, unless it's LHD/RHD specific it'll fit.
Only part where you need to be careful is with brakes as their later model NA's still have the smaller Revision 1 brakes even though US Turbo's have the larger ones.
