Has anyone ever tested 'uprated' side mount coolers against the standard cooler back to back regarding inlet temps, and/or pressure drops?
Been discussing intercoolers a lot recently and there are a lot of different thoughts!
Would be great if anyone has tested a cheaper cooler (like JP Performance) against a Greddy too. I've heard some very good things about Greddy cores, but the tight ar$e in me would like to know some numerical differences to justify the extra money!

Stock proven rubbish.
Jp etc good for 350hp
Phoenix power 400. Much bigger core. (One for sale now)
Greddy etc are just the same as eBay ones. .... after all they are just copied.

Has anyone compared the GReddy and cheap ebay copies side by side? I'd expect the GReddy core to be higher quality/more efficient.

There's a guy on mr2oc which swears that the standard Intercooler is on for a bit more power and that it's the fan that limits the cooling.

Just compare them.... sure they will allow more power if you hammer enough pressure through it - will it be efficient or cool well? No

I have just got myself a Blitz SBC-ID so can monitor inlet temps. I might add a extra temp sensor before the cooler and connect this and the ECU inlet temp sensor to the the controller and test back to back with the fan on and off.
Bound to make some difference as fans can restrict flow quite a bit, just risk heat soak I guess but I could live without booting from standing traffic. Only had the fan on once so far that was when it was sat idling on the drive.
What are peoples experience with the fan? Not had mine long so not run in the warm weather yet!

Have you seen the size of the core? They are called interwarmers for a reason!
Would be v interested to see those tests. It's also about the maximum flow the core can have too - ie put a flow / pressure sensor on the inlet and outlet and compare at what level they no longer remain equal.

Might be a while before I can do this but will definatly do it at some point.
You are right androo007 it is not just about temperature but also pressure drop. I will see if I can get a pressure sensor before the cooler as well.
I am thinking of trying to make a boss to space the dump valve out and have tappings for a temperature and pressure sensor. The SBC ID can take 3 sensor readings so I should be able to get both temps and the before pressure reading, and use the boost controller its self for the after pressure reading.

I have had loads of fails with sidemounts over the years.
They are inefficient, are very small and have extremely poor air flow. Best of a bad bunch are the spearco or p/p sidemounts.
A secondary problem is the position of the IAT sensor, prone to heatsoak, on the road, on the dyno and at standstill.
The ebay special is basically the same as the greddy, the later may flow better but back to back air temps will be fairly similar, That's if you have a better way of seeing these temps rather than the stock IAT sensor and a PFC commander for example.

greddy ic and water/meth injection, i dont see over 20-25c on boost, and this is measured inside the inlet manifold, not pre TB.
i would expect pre TB i would see lower temps than that.
will obviously heatsoak at idle, or when switched off, but so would a CC setup.
im pretty happy with that, and its stopped me fitting the st205 CC i have in the garage gathering dust.
i too have reservation of the fan shroud+fan. air flow can only escape past the blades, which id imagine at 50+mph maybe restricting flow.
on my old PP ic setup, i made spacers and ditched fan shroud, purely for more available air flow. plus at standstill the fan would help, even without the shroud.
no real conclusive data on this though.

Tbh the resistance posed by the shroud and the fan is negligible compared to the resistance of the ic itself.

If you added a restriction after something already with a restriction, surely not helping matters??
Surely best flow would be no fan shroud or fan.
However fan will help with heatsoak at low speeds and namely pushing away hot air from the downpipe.

No, because the pressure drop of the air being forced through the ic fins is so great that the fan and shroud won't reduce this any further no matter what the speed
