I gave TCB a call and spoke to a guy called Paul. Absolute legend, helped me out a treat and had a good chat about mr2s and celicas.
He confirmed, although I was told by an MR2 specialist lambdas werent required on earlier models (rev 2), that it is very important running a lambda sensor. This is obvious to some and I look stupid yeah, but if I'm told one thing by a specialist and another by forum gurus, I don't know who to believe. Either way, I'm just going to replace it and hope that sorts it.
Also JD bud it's confirmed the MR2s do have limp mode "ish" where the car will retard the timing, or wash the cylinders out of all oil leaving just the fuel as lubrication.
On a side note, very happy with their service. Maybe I'll start pestering them and not the forums..

Interesting
I hope I never get to experience that first hand.

They're a shop, we're a forum it's what we are here for. Just maybe don't start calling us keyboard warriors and morons and you might do just a bit better......
Re: MR2 Turbo Stopped Boosting
You definitely need the O2 sensor plugged in - the ECU doesn't have a clue what's going on with your engine otherwise surely! COuld you get hold of a new plug for it and solder it on or is that dodgy?

Don't be a tease, you made a similar comment when you had a tantrum last year
Re: MR2 Turbo Stopped Boosting
it only uses it for cruise/idle to be fair.
once on boost, its ignored.
but either way, for general running its totally a must.
would love to know what "specialist" is saying otherwise.

Re: MR2 Turbo Stopped Boosting
Well whatever it uses it for, the ECU won't see it's signal and will run a failsafe which is to dump more fuel than necessary to ensure the car doesn't lean out. Probably gets so rich it falls into one of the limp modes described previously.
I'm sure if you were to drop me a message I could tell you, but I won't be stating publicly otherwise.

Just a name applied to those who suit it
