[Mk2] [Turbo] Omoni gauges

Post by mr2nut123 »

Hi guys,

I have some gauges in this tubby and wanted some advice off the electrical pros :-)

The oil temp and water temp gauges appear to light up when the sidelights are turned on, but the needles don't move.

The oil pressure gauge works fine but that on doesn't light up. This particular gauge has a specific connecter that clicks into the back with a little box under the dash as opposed to just two simple power wires going to the other two gauges.

The two temp gauges are powered from one black and one white wire then spliced into two gauges. I have had a multi meter on the wires without any gauges connected. Whilst the car is running, I only see 0.01 with the meter set to 20v. When I apply the brake pedal or turn on the lights, the meter then shows 0.05. What do you think of the above voltage read outs? I'm not the best guy in the world with a multi meter, but does that suggest only 0.1v and 0.5v..?

I was told that these gauges worked before the engine was removed for some parts replacing.

I have checked the oil pressure braided hose in the engine bay to ensure its kink free etc.

sounds like the sensors to the two non responsive gauges haven't been re-connected (or maybe not properly).
The oil pressure gauge is mechanical by the sounds of it so it will show a reading with or without power (its a sprung tube inside where the oil pressure physically moves the needle). sounds like it has either and LED or EL display if it requires a little box for its illumination supply (i'd imagine EL) the little box (possible a transformer or bespoke constant current supply, who knows!) should be in turn connected to the Side light supply like the other two gauges are, check there next.

the other two gauges will work by being connected to their appropriate sensor which gives a varying resistance to ground (the gauge should have one or two wires out to the sensors, one of which will be at +12v).

check the wires again, but this time test them in turn against a known good earth, rather than bridging them. One of these wires should be a +12 with the engine running (your gauge supply) the other wire plugs into the sensor.

Cheers bishop, not quite sure though. The oil pressure gauge has a 12pin white connector which clicks into the unit. No oil goes to this gauge, it is electrical. Oil temp and water temp, a braided hose runs right into the back of them. The needles don't even slightly move on the oil and water temp gauges, but they DO light up when the headlights are switched on.

It's the REVERSE for the oil pressure. It doesn't light up at all, but the needle is fine. :-k

'Omoni' is that a typo or do you have some nasty chinese copy of an 'Omori' gauge?

lol. I have read about these 'discussions' on other forums. I don't want to turn this into a debate post please, but I was under the belief that Omori was the typo. :-k

edit: So it looks like Omori is the correct word, so perhaps these are knockoffs..? Pic to come...

Do you know what model gauges you have? Or got some photos? It's difficult to advise until we know exactly what you have.

Great :thumleft:

Hoping they're not counterfeits... that would suck :(

Here's a quick pic of it shinny. It's definitely an 'n' and not an 'i' :-k

Yea it would be a bit poop, but they are a bit cloudy and they don't light up very well so would just have to get a new set :)

Look the same as these: http://forum.jdmstyletuning.com/showthread.php?9864

Not sure if that makes then genuine or not... my guess is they're not the newest gauges out there.

Another set in the same range:

http://www.nengun.com/omori-meter/omori ... ter-384882

The photos make them look like electrical gauges. (You can see both temperature and pressure sensors)

I think they're genuine, but probably not been wired up correctly?

Weird. It looks like those gauges say Omoni too but they're Omori I believe?! You can tell they're quite old gauges to be fair, probably need replacing anyway.

Here's a quick video to show the current on the wires that were powering the two TEMP gauges (they DON'T power the oil pressure gauge, that's a very specific connector)

https://youtu.be/U-xpAggTafk

Showing a constant ignition current of 0.01 and when the brake is applied or sidelights switched on, it increases to 0.05 when the meter is set to 20 v. Am I right in saying that the gauge will need 5v? Correct me if I'm wrong, but surely 0.05 isn't enough to power the gauge when on the 20 - reading on a meter?

If they're called Omori gauges...why on earth do they clearly say OmoNi then? :lol:

I'm in a meeting so can't listen to the audio right now. Current and voltage are very different things... the way you're measuring implies you're looking at voltage not current (because if you were measuring current like that you'd have either have blown a fuse or destroyed your multimeter)

A low voltage like that implies to me that one side isn't connected; you said the side lights lit up the gauges so were the sidelights on? That would explain it. Car electrics are odd and a small change with the brake pedal could easily be explained away by capacitances or odd connection paths. I wouldn't read anything into it.

Don't forget it's a Japanese name that's just been written in Romanji (writing the Japanese in phonetically in roman characters) so it's not impossible they changed their mind about how to write it in Romanji. The Japanese language has a number of words that have changed to make them flow better and this could easily be of that.

Don't forget this is exactly what happened to Toyota! They were originally "Toyoda", which IIRC was actually the family name, but they changes to Toyota because it sounded nicer or made a nicer Kanji or something like that

so which of these, if any can you see and possibly trace through the car into the engine bay (shamelessly stolen from the rx7club site):

I've just bought a set of omori electrical gauges (oil temp, oil pressure and water temp).
They came with the appropriate sensors but the wires have been cut 3inches from each end.

Wire colours from the gauges are white - red - black - yellow - orange on the temp gauges and the oil pressure gauge also has blue - grey - brown - black along with the previous colours.

Any help with this would be much appreciated, I've looked all over the net trying to find wiring or install instructions with no success. I can't even find an omori website.

Managed to figure out some of the wires using a power probe

red = 12v power
black = earth
white = gauge backlight (12v ig?)
orange and yellow = sensor
sensor = earthed to engine

Those wires work for the temp gauges but still unsure about the oil pressure sensor wiring which has the extra brown black and grey wires....

could you do another video of the back of your gauges, all of them? it looks like the one in the first video is mechanical which means that the hose (most likely a capillary tube) should be connected to the engine at the other end. Capillary tubes are quite delicate and if it has been mishandled when the engine was removed it a possibility it was broken and this means the gauge would need to be replaced. :(

There are only two wires that go up to the dash to power these gauges. One red and one black. The temp gauges themselves are quite old and only have two wires coming out of them, white and black.

Hmmm.. Think I need to follow these wires back and find out where they get power from. The engine was removed for some internal work and apparently the gauges worked before..
