Wheels for a v6 mk1

Hi guys
This weekend I bought a 1mz mk1 and I have to say I'm in love with it but there's a few things I really don't like firstly the wheels. It's on 17s at the moment with mixed rubber I want to go back to 15s or 16s but I'm wondering if a staggered set up would be better. What tyres are other v6 owners running

That would look amazing on some proper old school JDM wheels. Some gold Work Equip 03's?

Most people stick the Mk3 stock wheels on as they are quite cheap and do a good enough job.

Thanks guys I've been looking at jdm wheels but I don't think I'm going to get anything too blingy as Im too lazy to keep them nice and polished. What size rubber should I look at running as I reckon anything less than 205 wide dosent stand a chance also is it worth changing to a staggered set up

Having invented the V6 Mk1 and built/driven them extensively i find a 16" wheel a great match, allows a fairly wide tyre on the rear (245/35/16 on a 16x9 works really well) and with a 215/40/16 on a 7.5J front i find you get all the grip you need while not having any tramlining effect you would get with a 17"

For me this gives you a big enough rear footprint to handle all of that torque, only downside is only Toyo Proxes come in that 245/35/16 size and aren't cheap.

15s don't come wide enough for me and the rear just lights up too easily with a 225 or under.

I'd honestly plea that you get some decent JDM wheels. There are not enough MK1s going around with good JDM wheels on.

If you did want to stay 15, then you will be able to get wide enough wheels, it's not hard to get 15s in 9" wide for example. As for going staggered, personal choice and how you like the car to feel. I would say look for some secondhand wheels from the likes of Work or Rays and get them refurbed. Also lightness of the wheel is absolutely key. Makes a big difference having lighter wheels.

I'm not exactly sure what rubber is available in that kind of size. I will have to look for my AE86 next year in terms of rubber. My favoured choices would be Yoko Advans or Contisport Contacts, but I'll bet they're not available in the size I want.

I run 15x7.5 front 16x8 rear TE37s on my 3SGTE Mk1 with 205 and 225 Kumho v70a (c.350hp)

Amongst many other chassis mods, for me provides a great balance on track, still allowing some sideways fun.

If it's not going to be a daily, surely a 225 width AD08R or similar will be more than up to the job of putting down the V6's power? Lots more wheel and tyre choice in 16x8 as well.

Lauren you will be pleased to to know that the plan was always to put something special on. I've always had a soft spot for the te37s and they would look so good in bronze but I can't find a set in the right sizes in a 4x100 stud pattern. Don't suppose anyone has a spare set lying around lol

It's just a bit of a waiting game when it comes to looking for secondhand TE37's. Some came up for my car so I snapped them up for the GT86.

It took me a year or two before the right wheels came up for the AE86. Just a case of waiting. I got a nice set of Work Meister S1's. Good luck.

Does anyone know if 8j wheels will fit under the standard rear arches as at the moment they need work but if I need to widen them it'll have to wait

I'm running 15x8 with no clearance/fitment issues on coilovers

I had to widen mine to ensure enough travel. will depend on offset though and tyre width.

You'll only get second hand TE37s from Japan or the states IMHO, I've hardly ever seen any in the uk.

They do come up from time to time in the UK. There's been a few sets for sale over the years on this forum!

But yeah, if you want a set ASAP, you're going to have to import. Check out DB8 Motorsports (Chris Wong) on Facebook - he's based in Hong Kong, but has a huge collection of proper JDM wheels for sale, updated regularly.

Thanks gazza I sent him a message on Facebook the other day he said he would let me know if can find something. I'm Not in a huge rush to get the wheels sorted but my arches need de rusting but there's no point doing them until I find a set of wheels as I dont fancy having to re do them if i get wheels that need a wider arch. I don't suppose any of you guys have a spare set of te37s just lying around

Just another question. Can mk1 4x100 hubs be swapped for 5x114 hubs from a mk2 or a celica maybe? I'm finding it hard to find a set of wheels in 4x100 that i like with the sizes I need

Yes the axle inserts can be swapped with some machining!

(My wheels are 5 x 114.3)

Fronts were machined sw20

Rears were from a camry I think! ? These allowed use of complete mk2 drive shafts as well.

Keep in mind this may need some brake mods as well. Mime are modified mk2 brakes and then fit standard mk2 discs to make future replacements easy!
