Do you have working and running aircon??

If it's a Japanese car it won't have EGR anyways.

reason i ask about aircon is because that black unit right at the bottom of the picture with 2 blue hoses attached is the a/c idle up valve!

if your not running a/c you dont need this and can remove it. so theres a couple of hoses to not worry about.

pipe7 need to attach to a nipple at the inlet mani somewhere.
6 and 5, sorry its been a while since ill dealt with an external wastegate
1-4, not needed. you could attach one of them to the a/c idle up valve if you used it, but your not. so basically not needed.

Ok cool thanks

That makes more sense now

Pipe 1 is showing the two feeds off the turbo pipe

What would go here??

Thanks

potentially 1 for boost controller, 1 for one of the wastegate ports.

hopefully someone comes along who is familiar with external wastegate vac line setups.

Maybe good idea to change the thread title to external wastegate hose setup or something?

Nothing should go on them, all lines should come from the manifold.

if there isnt a feed directly off the turbo (to control the wastegate), you can use one of them surely.

its the same thing.

The line to the bottom port on the ext wastegate should never come from the manifold, external wastegates aren't supposed to see vacuum. the barb fitting on the charge pipe is ideal for that assuming there isn't one on the compressor housing.

the top fitting on the wastegate should be left vented to atmosphere unless you're using an electroninc boost controller then the instructions for that will show you how to install the solenoid to the top port.

No not the same thing at all

Every waste gate on turbo systems, before built in waste gates on the turbos, had the control from the manifold.
You get far better control working off the boost that you want going into the engine and as soon as the throttle is closed the waste gate is shut instead of hanging open till the boost before the throttle has dropped down.

Tial advise that the pressure reference is taken from the inlet tract prior to the throttle plate, this avoids the wastegate experiencing a vacuum.

In practice people do it both ways, and I've not heard of this damaging the wastegate...that said I remember Chris being "told" (bollocked) by Dave Rowe to do it properly and take the boost reference from the compressor housing instead of the inlet manifold

As long as you map the engine with the same configuration as you intend to run the engine with i can't see any problem doing it as Tial suggest.

care to elaborate on that?

because the actual manufacturers of these external wastegates would beg to differ..

I won't bother linking to other pictures/articles, but they're out there

also, as the valve stem of an external gate is never 100% sealed (it can't be, it would seize up) having your 'pressure' source coming from somewhere that also sees vacuum means when you are in a vac situation you're pulling dirty, unfiltered air back up through the valve and into your inlet through your screamer/dump pipe.. or, if you have a plumbed back dump pipe then it'll be exhaust gas that you're pulling back. which is why an external wastegate should never be plumbed into the manifold and always the compressor housing.

every technical article/book/boost controller instructions that I've ever read has always said to have the pressure source for the actuator/wastegate from the compressor housing (or at least pre throttle body) and to tee your boost gauge from the manifold. that way you have the quickest response/control from the wastegate and a true reading of pressure in manifold.

Toyota out the factory have the wastegate straight to the comp housing.

And Toyota love vac lines.
Surely if it's better from the mani, Toyota would have found a way to route a hose to it.
