Decisions on what to do with this??

Hi guys,

destroyed the front end on my mr2, have checked it out and don't personally think it's fixable. Need some input as to what's best to do. Do i try to get a shell and transplant, or break for parts??

It's got a good spec, so I don't really want to break it. Will I be able to find a Mk2 Rev3 turbo t-bar shell somewhere though do you think?

that's likely beyond reasonable repair, decent shells do come up but reshelling costs alot more than you'd think to do it properly even if you diy.

it's likely cheaper and easier to break yours for spares and buy another with most of the same mods already done then just keep the rarer bits you'll struggle to find for the new one

Don't think it's a good idea to try and find one that's got gearbox failure or bottom end failure and transplant then?

On the contrary - get a good NA and transplant it over - turn it into turbo. NA are dead cheap - and I've seen good bare shells go for around £300.

Great opportunity too also to get a shell, sort it, future proof it (rust prevention) etc and have a sorted motor

Even if you bought an NA in good order and sold off all the spare bits you wouldn't be much worse off.

The engine is forged, Greddy intercooler, samco hoses etc...so don't really wanna get rid.

Surely converting an NA to turbo hits you hard on the insurance??

Providing that the conversion is carried out to a good standard with engineers report, then it should be no more than a genuine MR2 turbo.

I'd try and find another turbo shell if I were you. Insurance on my Rev 3 turbo with mods declared is about £560, my turbo converted NA is going to be £1500+ according to comparison sites Guess I'll have to call around and see if I can make them see sense lol

Wouldn't say it's easily repairable - if the crash bar and surrounding metalwork was untouched you'd be ok as panels are easy to replace, but you've probably bent some of the steering arm mounts etc.

Comparison sites are just a pointless shitty front for data mining. Best bet is always phoning round and talking to insurers individually.

It's a major b*llache spending half an hour on the phone to each insurer though Especially when they quote you several thousand after prompting a load of pointless info out of you ie. profession, marital status, years of residence etc.

Comparison sites are NOT suitable for specialist cars. Imports, cars with engine conversions, or extensive modifications require a specialist insurer.

It is if you want to get the appropriate level of cover at a reasonable price for the car in question.
