[Mk2] [Turbo] Repositioning alternator using Celica bracket

Post by shinny »

After my alternator failure on track at JapFest yesterday, I'm thinking of converting to use the Celica alternator bracket from the ST205 GT4 to put the alternator somewhere more accessible in the bay!

My car is a rev3 turbo with ST205 charge cooler, so no intercooler pipework in the way. I also have no aircon compressor, which is on the same belt on a Celica. I am perfectly capable of extending the wiring, so that's not a problem.

Has anyone on here got experience doing this? Particularly getting the tensioning etc. setup. I have a screamer pipe running nearby, so will probably need some form of heatshield to protect the alt.

Someone on Facebook suggested finding an ST202 without aircon being broken and grab the bracket and idler pulley from that. Would certainly be the easiest bolt-on solution!

Celica brackets are the way to go (alternator has to be repositioned when doing Mk1.5 conversions). Not sure it's worth the bother IMHO.

I'm confused... didn't you just contradict yourself there?

I need to get the alternator out anyway, so I'm not doing this for the heck of it.Having spent hours on my back changing alternators before, I don't think I'm going to mind a little hassle to put it somewhere easier to work on. Perhaps it's not worth it when you've got a lift, but with only axle stands, the alt is a pig of a job!

What i meant was if you want to relocate, then use the Celica setup.

Once you've got old one out, isn't it just as easy to slip new one into place?

This will be the third alternator change in 25 months... you can't blame me for wanting to make number four easier in case I can't figure out why they keep failing...

Unlucky! I've only had one reconditioned alternator fail in 11 years.

You have got all the under shielding in place including the one to keep the water from the wheel getting on the alternator?

The more I chatted about it, the more it sounded like a bad idea from a heat POV. I eventually replaced the alternator in the MR2 position... but given I could detach the exhaust midpipe this time, it only took me 90min instead of 7 hours :thumleft:
