Rust above windscreen

Post by andyj »

Only bit of rust on my car is the usual bubbles above the windscreen. Not getting bigger but I'd like to get 100% fixed. I realise it's windscreen out job and screen breaks when removed. No problem as screen has a few small scratches so nice to get that perfect also. Mines a T bar so the above screen panel is just a narrow strip. I gather there's no panel available so presumably it's cut and weld job. Anyone any experience of having this done and any problems/costs?

Get your windscreen cracked by a loose chipping or stone from a lorry on an M-road. Pay £50 excess through your insurance. Take it to RAC or your insurers approved windscreen place...

...once the old one is out, ask to delay fitment of new until you get the bodywork above sorted, pre-book for a bodyshop (I got quoted £75 for the repair and re-spray) then, once done, return it for new screen and moulding fitment.

Moulding will be part of the price

Not bad for £125 eh? lol

Basically works with Fully-Comp. Some do crack whilst being removed, but some don't, cost to remove and refit is £45 odd though so for £5 more you get a brand spanker lol.

Thanks Rick - just what I wanted to hear. Yes, did think my screen would have a little accident ...then whilst the screen is out...!

Worth that money to have no rust and no scratches on the screen. Going to talk first to the body repair people. Got nice local one that does cash deals and no VAT!!!

Thats the way boss. You can buy the panel, but at £289.47+v it's a rip!

Thats what i'm doing - and being in the trade - it certainly helps :)

For a lot of the rust in this location, you don't really need to take the screen out. If you remove the rubber strip above the screen you can get in to most of the areas which rust.

Thanks for comments. Insurers windscreen people had a look and have told they'd replace the screen on the insurance if I wanted it done, as there's some light damage already. So no hassle if the screen has to come out.

oh well..just looked. Im not covered.....TPFT and didnt take out windscreen cover.

Looks like the repair whilst window is still in job for me.

these rubber strips come with clips though. The windscreen needs to be out to secure them. Ho can that be done...or is it a case of just having to stick on the rubber strip as best as poss......I really want to know as i want to get mine done before the wetter/colder weather arrives.

The rubbers strip does need to be put in when the windscreen is....

but, our SC had the rust above the screen sorted by Millways - they also replaced the windscreen at the same time, but failed to get the strip stuck in on the nearside (which then flaps up after you travel over 50mph - most annoying!)

I got the Autoglass man to take a look at it whilst he was replacing the rear quarter on my focus (fecking ejjit theives :x ), and he got some putty style stuff, shoved it under the strip and squished it down with that....
Seems to work ok (i.e. it doesn't flap about), but i'm not sure whether it's going to promote rust again as the seal isn't as good as if it was sealed at the same time as the windscreen, which will let more water than normal in behind it..... :-k

Me and dad had a look at it yesterday. we peeled back the rubber and found it to be a tiny spot but luckily the spot happens to be right at the top of where the strip meets the rook. A small stone has been trapped in there and rubbed on the paintwork and caused it. So i have removed the stone. next I'm getting the strip inned back while I prep it with some kurust and then prime and paint. I wont have to remove the rubber strip after all. [-o< i didn't think it was too bad but you never know until you really look properly. Luckily this'll be an easy fix. :D

Another thing to check before racing to replace your screen...

I have heard and would welcome confirmation one way or another that the replacement aftermarket screens are thinner than the original ones and because of this don't fit in the seals as well. This allegedly makes them more prone to leaking.

Has anyone else heard this?
