You'll only find what Toyota refer to as a "fuel pump relay" on the turbo, and it's function is to vary the speed of the pump between two fixed settings by passing the power feed via a resistor when the fuel pump relay is not energised.

The NA doesn't have that relay. But the power feed for the fuel pump in both the NA and turbo is actually fed from the Open Circuit relay which is located in the fuse box in the engine compartment. So this is the relay that must be energised for the fuel pump to operate.

Yep, it's the inner square relay marked c/opn on the lid, which you can just make out on that photo.

Why?

It's almost unheard of for the CO relay to fail. What's your problem?

As Peter said, it's not worth changing this relay unless you are really sure it's failed.

I've been trying to resolve what appeared to be a fuel pump issue on my na, but when you look more closely the operation of the fuel pump is controlled by so many other things it can be hard to get at the root of the problem.

If you want to eliminate any possible issues with this relay, it's easy enough to take it out and temporarily bridge the appropriate connections in the relay socket. On mine this was:

As the issue didn't go away when I did this, that quickly eliminated any possible issue with the relay itself.

My advice is never change something unless you're sure that it's broken as the costs can quickly mount up that way.

Just my 2p worth.

Well I've bridged the two pins on the diag port for the fuel pump to prime as I had nothing there... I thought it was a problem with the relay... I'll try that and let you no pal 👍

Try a direct 12v feed into the fuel pump wiring socket under the centre console, to eliminate the possibility the pump is dead.
