My CT20B Turbo is original and seems to be all good and running fine. It's done just under 90k genuine miles.
I just don't want it to fail on me as I have changed the ecu to a power fc engine is standard rev 3 turbo.
Should I get the turbo serviced etc or change to another turbo?
Want reliability.
Love the boost on the ct20b
I'm not too good with this type of thing so your advice please fellas.
Edited as I need GT28 not GT35

You can't just jump to a GT35!!
On stock internals, think about GT28 or maybe a GT30 if you're going aftermarket.

Complete opposite end of the scale there with those 2. Basically something smaller like a GT28 will have good all round performance. On boost quickly and hold it to red line but overall power is limited.
a bigger turbo takes more to spool up but will hit you a lot harder and give big figures. But with big figures you need big everything else.

Thanks, this is helpful. It was a friend who mentioned The bigger turbo. I think the GT28 is the one so same question but GT28
Great boost and hold to red line is exactly what I want not huge power.
So to stick to my turbo or not?

If your not chasing power. A GT28 is a good turbo to go for. I think you get a 2860., 2871, 2876. You can possibly get a 3071 aswell so theres plenty to choose from but its not just a case of throwing on a turbo and all will be fine. You need to determine where you want boost to start and how much boost you will be running. If you want it to start at similar rpm to the ct20b then you will need to get the right size turbine wheel and housing etc. Smaller usually starts earlier but doesnt have same peak power as a larger turbine housing will.
ATS have alot of kits that you can get some good info from. My 3076 came from there.

Gt2860rs (and perhaps its gtx equivalent) is probably the only gt28 sized turbo that is going to be worth considering over the ct20b.
At safe pump fuel boost levels for that turbo size (eg. 17 to 18psi) you would gain a minor increase in power and perhaps a few hundred rpm improvement in spool over your current turbo.
It's what I'd consider a 'no compromise' turbo in that it offers you the best of what a small turbo can offer...but as to whether the performance upgrade over the ct20b is worth the ££££ it will cost is down to the individual.
As for gt turbo reliability - I think that's certainly up for debate. I personally had a gt2860rs and a gt3071r fail in relatively short periods of time. Both times the reasons were suspected incorrect oil restrictor sizes. I think you'd be doing extremely well to get anywhere near 90k out of one of these turbos

Re: Rev 3 CT20b or Garrett GT28
The 3071 is a great turbo, run low boost for standard internals then if you go all out wind the boost up and hit big power! I recently made 465bhp on one at 1.6bar.
Re: Rev 3 CT20b or Garrett GT28
I have a freshly refurbished CT20b with steel shaft, 360 degree thrust washer, Wossner 86.5mm pistons, exhaust, decat, induction kit and chargecooler. Mapped to 1.2 bar on Apexi FC.
It's a bloody quick car! 306bhp.

Red what BHP are you getting. Where did you get the CT20b refurbished and cost? I might just end up doing that.
Re: Rev 3 CT20b or Garrett GT28
As far as i've read, those turbos should be options to consider looking for a quick spool... What do you think?
1- Gtx2860r
2- Precision 5130
3- Hybrid CT26 or CT27

Got the turbo refurbished by Universal Turbos. Car is putting out 306bhp @ 1.2bar
Cost for the turbo refurb was £612.
