[Mk2] [Turbo] Engine Rebuild Summer 2014

Post by Spawn »

I've owned 3 MR2s now, the most recent since approximately August 2011. Around June 2014 I started to notice that the engine began to use oil quite rapidly, which led to a compression test. Cylinders 1 2 and 3, all read over 12bar, unfortunately cylinder number 4 gave around 4bar.

After careful consideration, myself and a couple of friends decided to go ahead and rebuild the engine (assuming piston rings were the problem). One option was to break the car for parts however I couldn't bring myself to that.
Whilst I have dabbled in breaks, servicing and general maintenance without problem, this was a reasonable challenge for me - luckily I am keen to learn. My friends happen to be pretty handy and are used to whipping engines out (I guess thats normal for 200sx owners).

Fortunately my mother has moved to an old farm house, and let me borrow a barn to carry out the rebuild. I shall let the pictures of the rebuild do the majority of the talking:

It was pretty dirty below where the chargecooler sat:

I got quite excited when we removed the head!

I couldn't really get a decent photo, however the cylinder had a small area where the piston/rings had caught:

Then the damage become obvious!

I thought this would be a good time to get the chargecooler and cam cover the once over:

Also cleaned the valves:

I had a local specialist look at the bore who advised honing, which was promptly carried out - removing any markings within the cylinder:

New piston and rings arrived:

Big end shells replaced:

Done!

I've since sorted out the SW20 logo to reflect off the shroud (I've only done this recently hence the delay in posting this):

I also have several videos showing the first running, timing adjustment etc however these are appearing blank when uploading so I will sort these later.

Since the rebuild all has been working fine - a huge success. I've ran the engine in for 1000 miles, and now due an oil change. I've learnt a few things along the way, I've sworn a lot and had a good laugh doing it. I thought I'd share it on Imoc :)

Well done!!

That's a solid determination not to remove the engine from the car you've got there- I'm very impressed!!
