gauges whats everyone using

Post by grainge231 »

Thinking of fitting some gauges. Not sure what to go with I want something basic but some look very cheap. Just wondering what people are using and what peoples opinions are? Pictures please :) probably going to have water temp. Oil pressure and one other not sure what.

I've got SPA design dual gauges, one for oil pressure/temp and another for coolant temp/voltage.

Also have an innovate mtx-l wideband gauge.

I would suggest oil temp is more useful that water temp (besides, you have WT in the speedo cluster anyway), although oil pressure is a must if you have any oil system modifications.

You haven't mentioned boost so I'm guessing your car is NA... and if it's not really a modified engine then most gauges have little practical use. Oil temperature will shock you how much slower it is to warm up compared to the water, which might delay when you consider the car "warmed up" enough to floor the throttle. Otherwise it's mostly just for interest.

On my turbo I'm currently running:
Defi Boost
Defi Oil Temp
Defi Oil Pres
PLX Devices Wideband AFR
Prosport Water Temp
eBay digital LED Volt
eBay digital LED external temp
eBay digital LED CC coolant in temp
eBay digital LED CC coolant out temp

And it looks a little bit like this:

Since that photo the Defis have been modded to give a better match for the blue colour, meaning every gauge on the list has now seen some modification (in the case of the AFR, quite significant!)

I always wanted some cool jdm gauges but there were never any around when I had money. Defi's would be nice but I cant belive how expensive they are.

To be fair the SPA's do a great job and are easy to read at just a glance, which is good on a trackday. They also have warning, peak options and you can change the colours of them!

Thats very true I wouldnt be bothering with a load of gagues on a farily standard na.

Have you got one of the new plx widebands with the fancy lcd screens? I was going to go with that or the innovate. But I found a quite a few people who had issues with them after searching. In the end I ended up going with the innovate as I couldnt find anyone with a bad word to say about them.

No, I've got a pretty ancient PLX M300:

It is, however, butchered with a smaller, remote LED display and it now sits in my speedo cluster above a cheap volt gauge:

I've got a Greddy Multi D/A in my mr2, does boost pressure, water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, fuel pressure, EGT and batt voltage in one unit, with programmable warning levels etc.. pretty cool bit of kit but not cheap.

I can also source replicas of most greddy, apexi and defi gauges from the manufacturer and currently have some "defi" on order to inspect/test before possibly selling them if they're any good.

I've currently got these 52mm gauges:

Stack Oil Temp
Stack Oil Pressure
Stack Analogue clock
Stack Voltmeter
AEM Wideband

I also run an EMS digital boost gauge in the stock location.

Stay away from cheap ebay tat, and go for makes like:

Stack, SPA, Blitz, Apexi, Greddy, Autometer, HKS.

Out the box though it only comes with 3 right.
Your probably looking at £500+ for all the connectors/sensors (+gauge), maybe more for everything you mention.
Lovely gauge though.

I personally run and like old school greddys, pretty darn rare with the black face and data link units (so memory/peak function). Boost gauge i imported from Japan for the hell of it.

I haven't got the EGT or fuel pressure sensors, the sensors are about £50 each.. I can't remember exactly how much by but I'm sure mine was over £400 as it is now (I imported it from japan with the sensors i wanted at the time, still cheaper than buying in the UK even with import duties and parcel force "handling fee")

it's one of my favourite modifications on the car, it has suggested to me I need an oil cooler though.
