N/A's and LSD's?

Post by acf8181 »

I've tried searching but found nothing.

Whats the deal....optional on all rev's? only option on imports? standard on rev5? etc

i've seen how to do the test with jacking up car, but is there any indication on the VIN plate perhaps?

Just curious really

IIRC, BEAMS MR2's have them and some Rev5's do, not very common though. I don't know if it was an option, though the identification plate should identify if it has a factory LSD.

That test (both wheels spinning the same way) doesn't work with all LSD's. Some will behave like they are open (spin opposite ways) when there is no load on either wheel. I can't remember which ones are which off the top of my head, Im sure the info is out there though :thumleft:

As gazza is trying to say the wheel spinning test doesn't work as there torsen diffs. The only 2 ways to check are remove a drive shaft and look or contact toyota with the vin

That's the one.

You should be able to tell if it has a factory LSD from the transmission code on the ID plate in the frunk. TM is the transmission type, and A ID's the diff. Mine says 472-S54. Finding out what the A number actually means is a challenge though!

It's probably easiest to pull a driveshaft and stick your nose in though :)

Out of interest, what is the 3 character code for the diff on your VIN plate in the frunk?

Ill have a look (not been in garage for a few months).

Recall reading an article which showed a "bar" through the opening into the gbox being used to ID it.

And yours deffo doesn't have one? My mates rev5 uk says same thing.

My Import rev3 has a different VIN layout, but is A = 692, TM = S54 (am pretty sure mine does't have one mind...just put it in for info)

Ok, on this random googled link to a canadian website -http://forums.bcmr2.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=29 - someone says this...

"All cars have a code of A/TM on the door jamb sticker, which is axle and transmission. The axle code is a 3 digit number and if it's odd, it should be an LSD car. If it's even, it should be an open differential car. All turbos should have E153 for the TM code and all NAs should have S54"

So judging by inf on my vin, and the rev5 vin, they're both even numbers, so no lsd.

But now on this site i find - http://www.mr2.ie/mr2-forum/10-general/ ... -open-diff -

"MR2 (which I have been lucky enough to be able to confirm)
S54 - 692 = No LSD
S54 - 69A = LSD "

472 must be uk 'box (final drive is different in the import/692 'box)
