[Mk2] [Turbo] Not a good start. It's broken already please help

Post by rs319r »

Hey guys,

Just bought i mr2 mk2 rev 3 turbo and it's broken down already. The cars only 4 days old and i'm really not sure where to start. So far I've covered about 500 miles and all was fine until yesterday. Under full boost i felt a sudden loss of power so i decelerated and stopped to see what'd happened. I left the car running and noticed huge amounts of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and was running very lumpy, almost like an impreza sound.. :( After further investigation there was blue smoke coming out of the air box next to the turbo. (Which i thought could be oil seals?) Then after removing the plugs to check spark i noticed that the 3rd cylinder was drenched in oil.

This is very new to me guys so any support would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the York area and was wondering if there's any specialists nearby that can repair or if anyone has a heads up to what could be wrong. I figured the worst case could be i've damaged 3rd piston/rings but would the car still run like this?

Many Thanks

Chris

Blue smoke is oil.

So either turbo has gone, and/or piston. To me, sounds like piston.

I assume you had lots of fun in those 500 miles in 4days!

Mods, boost, fuel?

Sorry to hear what's happened.
Next step, check the turbo for lots of play?
Do a compression test?

Welcome to imoc just wish it was under better circumstances :(

I would have a compression test done and hope its the turbo that has let go, much easier fix.

Best of luck, hope its sorted soon :thumleft:

Kev.

Edit.. Dont like giving people bad news but I had a turbo blow its seals lots of blue smoke especially on boost but the car still ran fine, sorry

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah it was short lived but very fun. Mods are uprated inter cooler, berk decat with blue flame exhaust, apexi fc acu, and boost controller. the highest boost pressure recorded was 1.10 bar. This was all set up by fensport i was told but i haven't touched any settings on the boost controller.

Many Thanks for the help/support and i'll get a compression test sorted tonight. I assume i'll have to take the turbo off and check it that way?

By the way it's sounding i'd say it's piston also :-( If this is the case know of anywhere that can repair?

it does sound fairly terminal, did you check all the plugs?? only 1 of them being oily sounds like a piston/rings :( it doesn't have to be an engine out job to change these but if the bore is scored it'd need re-bored and honed.

it is frustrating, don't let this put you off, they really are reliable!!! my last car was run at 1bar of boost for 7 years without so much as a niggle from the engine!!

This is a very good shout if you are stuck buddy. Simon @ YVS is a top bloke!
He's back from Holidays on Monday so if you get stuck give him a call :) he is the man for the job. I travel over 250miles each way to go to him haha!

Anyways, I hope you get it sorted and get back to enjoying the car :)

First thing to do is make sure none of the turbo hoses have come off, follow the path from the turbo outlet through the intercooler and back to the throttle body. If one of these wasn't on properly then chances are it will let go at full boost and would give you similar symptoms to those you describe.

Sod's law dictates it will be the connection which is hardest to see\get at.

So I checked it out with a compression test and there's no compression at all on one of the cylinders. The one which wouldn't really fire and the plug was wet with oil. So I guess off to yvs it goes. To find out further I've to ring on Monday and gets Simon's opinion. Just want to say thank to all you guys and I really appreciate the help you've all provided.

I do still wonder what caused it and how I can ensure it dosnt happen again when it's been rebuilt. Does anyone have a rough est of how much it's going to cost?

Running lean and melted the piston. Cylinder 3 usually let's go as its the shortest run to the turbo and gets hotter. Could be a bad map, I'd probably consider running a stock ecu at that level of mods and boost as then at least you know the map is fairly safe.

Cost will depend on the damage it has done to the bore when its let go, may be time for a new block if its scored it badly.

You need a set of 8.0:1 comp pistons and a complete engine rebuild. If it is done right it will cost around £2500.00

Dodgy injector or bad map, or it's maybe just been bad luck. Injectors rarely go on these as well :(

£2500- what are your costings behind that Bob?

Assuming the bore is feked...new set of forged pistons (with rings), rebore, maybe fresh bearings.

What am I missing??

If the engines out wouldnt you want to be doing gaskets, waterpump, oilpump, belts etc seeing as its already out of the car.

Agreed- but £2.5k? I guess once you add labour in it's probably not far off :-k

May as well go for 8:1 forged pistons, and stick a bigger blower on at the same time then :eye:
