How do I get pops/flame on overrun? - rev 2 turbo

I've a rev 2 turbo with hks silent single exit system, eBay decat with support bracket, uprated intercooler and cone filter. Everything else is standard, including recirc vavle.

I hear people get a lot of grumbling or popping when changing gear on mr2's but I've not managed to achieve this. I take it if I put a BOV - atmosphere it will cause stuttering between gears but make it run rich enough to possibly pop on gear change? Is my exhaust will the silencer in also stopping this? Any thing else I can do?

I've no idea why you would want to prove to the world your car is not fuelling properly.

You'll need a straight through type exhaust system, and a vta dump valve.]#

The Popping is unburnt fuel igniting in the temperature of the exhaust system.

You can normally make it happen by pressing the throttle momentarily and immediately backing off which puts more fuel into the mix but it then gets burnt in the exhaust.

Yeah I'm a big kid unfortunately and like a friends rb320 I'd love to pop a flame on a hard pull changing gear. Wouldn't want it to happen everytime I changed gear normal shifting.

Is the hks silent system not free flowing enough?

I wouldn't want to have my car more noticeable than it is already with flames coming out of the exhaust for the BIB!

Plus the pops and bangs get a little addictive when you realise you can make them happen by lifting off and tapping the fun pedal..

Over fueling and a hot free flowing exhaust exhaust will get you flames, pops and bangs.
I had an xr2 mid 90's with a full stainless system fitted and it had a slight leak in the system. if i reved the engine, on overrun i would get a blue cone shaped Bunsen burner type flame out the exhaust lol
My guess was oxygen was sucked in to the system mixed with unburned fuel and bob your uncle, pyrotechnic exhaust flames

I did fix the leak and the pyrotechnics stopped

The exhaust has to be really hot to do that though. My friends MR2 does it too. His has had the timing advanced too which may have something to do with it? Both decatted.

Its your car mate its up to you what you do.

But the perception of the modified car community, is certainly not going to be enhanced. having you car popping and banging and spitting flames down the local high street.

You could well be inviting a section 59.

Anyway as i say your car, just my 2p

With an free flowing exhaust and breathing mods.. yes most turbos do pop and bang..

I get a pop on the overrun sometimes, but not excessively, and the short run of the exhaust makes them more obvious.

If for instance you were popping, crackling, and banging enough to attract an afformentioned Section 59 warning then I'd suggest that your car is probably a bit poorly and it would be time to go through the usually checks for overfuelling; ignition, lambda, sensors, fault codes, etc.

Of course, Section 59 is always at the mercy of interpretation and I think it's one of those things that is there more for the prevention of stupid things like burnouts at the lights or aggressive undertaking etc.

I was passed by a group of goons in their assorted hatchbacks street racing on the Croydon flyover last Saturday night - that's definitely worth a Section 59

I dunno, i'm always a fan of the 'authorities' not taking an interest in me or my car. Stealth is the way to enjoy a car. Nothing to see here, move along or 'these are not the droids we are looking for' is what I would like to cross the mind of law when they see my cars.

Flames? Well you'd have to install W.A.N.K. filter 1.8 to your ecu and make your choke throttle the chicken to 11.

An eager young constable or a dopey jaded older one at that - seeing your car fart blue flames may yank a section 59 upon thou… Keep it stealth - then it's gone….

I think you should probably choose a car that isnt a mid engined 2 seater sportscar if you wanted something thats stealthy.

Honestly I never have any trouble with police, mainly because I dont drive like a knob. The only time mine apparently spat flames was on track on revmatched downshifts.

When I first got mine it would always pop/bang when coming off the throttle, this was down to a leaking oxygen sensor gasket causing it to over fuel.
