Megasquirt standalone ECU. Thoughts?

Post by GreddyMR2 »

Hi there,

I am planning to fit a standalone next year so I start collecting the information about various ECUs.

There is a good price for Megasquirt fully plug&play ECU. I like it for its easy installation and a good price. One of my friends told this ECU is good enough and I don't need to look anywhere else, but another guy told this is out-dated ECU and I need something more advanced.
http://twosrus.com/catalog/product_info ... cts_id=853

For now I have rev1 engine with wiseco pistons, CR20 upgraded turbo, usual intake, exhaust and IC mods. I'm not planning anything crazy yet, because everything is rebuilt now.

So what do you think about this ECU? :)

Thank you in advance!

It should be good enough. There's a plug and play ECU Master, too, now, about £100 more IIRC.

Megasquirt is pretty much able to do anything if you build it yourself -- or you'll be looking at a 2k plus mapping alternative.

Would be interesting to know what your mate thinks you need.

Unless you go for a Link, PowerFC and others which will come out at way under 2K supplied, fitted and mapped.

My mate told me to use Apexi pfc or Vems.

If I take megasquirt, it will be about 900gbp fitted and mapped.
Here in Lithuania mapping is about 250gbp.

ALL the big power builds I know have Motec ECU's, for very good reason from what the owners/builders have told me. Not cheap though.

Si Hicks was running over 550 bhp and ran a Syvecs ECU.

I was thinking the same, maybe Si's wasnt a big a build in that case :?
Im gearing towards a Syvecs too.

I am curious as to why your friend has said that you need more advanced though?

2.2, over 550bhp and 0-60 in 3 secs, how much more of a big power build do you want?

There are many ECUs every bit as good as MoTec. And just as expensive. Syvecs being one of them.

Gang up on Rich again for not having the opinion of the Peterites.....

I don't look up every car on here to check which ECU they are running, I'm afraid. The cars that I have seen in front of me running big power have had Motecs on them.

I don't aim to big power, just want to have the most of my current setup and reliability.
So wondering if MS is good enough for it.

My friend just told that MS is old, but he didn't tell any arguments.

There are a few different versions of megasquirt iirc, the first version is quite basic. But MS is more for someone who wants to diy stuff.

Heres a comparison table for the different versions.

Bang on.

And for what it is, good value for money. But at the same time don't expect a three legged donkey to perform like a thoroughbred.

There are 3 versions as I understand. I am looking to MS 2 which is prepared for plug and play.

There is a more information on it over on the us mr2oc, but after a bit of research it does seem a bit barebones compared to other standalones.

Its a bit annoying because you either have the choice of the power fc, which works but is pretty basic now. Or stuff like syvecs/motec which is probably worth more than my car.

It would be nice if there was some sort of midrange between the two tbh.
