wiper washer not working but wash motor is ok

Post by jcbadger »

Hi all

I'm really baffled. All my wiper settings are working fine and there are no blown fuses but the wiper wash only refuses to work. The motor is fine because it works when connected direct to the battery. When I push the wiper switch the wiper moves but the motor does not run. There is either a break in the wire from the switch to the motor or the switch is dud - but then the switch works fine on all the other settings and the push function does get the wiper moving but it seem there is no power getting to the motor as I'm not getting voltage readings in the motor connection plug when the switch is pushed in. Could it be the relay? As I understand it the relay controls all the settings including the wash motor - or am I reading the wiring diagram wrong. Where is the relay anyway? Is it separate or built into the switch itself? Thanks.

Easy to pull the relay and bench test it.
Check to see if you have 12v on both sets of pins on the relay.
If you have +12Ve between 86 + 85 with the switch pressed you know the switch + dash wiring is OK.
You should have +12Ve out of pin 30 with the ignition on, if not check the wiring to the relay.
87 should have +12Ve when the switch is pressed as well, but this is likely the point of failure.
Relays don't last for ever.

hi thanks for the reply. Where is the relay located? I have come up with a fix that works but is it ok though. I connected a multimeter and couldn't get continuity from the blue/yellow washer motor wire that goes from the back of the switch to the motor; hence no power to the motor. I cut the blue/ yellow wire and connected new wire to it and ran the new wire to the motor. It now works. everything is working fine - there was just a break in the continuity in the wire (somewhere in the wiring behind the dashboard) from the switch to the motor,. I did it this way but is it ok to do so.

I just couldn't find the wiper relay to check it - maybe the reason why there is no continuity in the wire from the switch to the washer motor is because the relay is not completing the circuit (my understanding of a relay is that its basically a type of switch). So it could indeed be a relay problem but I don't fancy taking everything apart again (pain in the ar$e job)

There is no relay for the washer motor, it's controlled by a contact on the wiper switch.
Power for the washer motor comes directly from the wiper fuse, the return leg from the other side of the motor is then earthed via a contact in the wiper switch, (its a common Toyota practice to switch the return leg and not the live leg)
The wiper relay only controls the wiper motor and is built into the switch, some pics and details here http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jimilawson/V ... ion%20.htm
Quite often problems with the wipers are caused by dry soldered joints in the switch, re-soldering them often cures the problems, it's normally the soldering on the wire links inside the switch that need re-soldered, that's the 6 wire links on the left side of the circuit board in this picture
