What Tyre Pressure in 205/40/17r

Post by mr2mk1chick »

Hi
Just tried the search function, but got horribly lost in tyre sizes on mk2's etc, and could'nt refine serach enough, so............

What pressures should i put in my 17's on a mk1? I tried 26/28 at a guess but want to be safe.

hmmm sounds a little low but not sure as I run my 18"s on 32/34 and run my 15"s on 34 all round and get good results with that but 17s on a mk1 hmmm not sure on that one !

You can likely run lower pressures because your sidewall is stiffer.

I used to run 24/30 on my 15s which had very stiff sidewalls (advan neova LTS). But it depends a bit on your tyres. eg F1s have jelly for sidewalls whereas SO3s are very stiff.

I find 30psi a good medium in most of my cars tbh, including the skyline on 18s. Not too hard, not too soft IMHO.

Jesus Sam

Have a look at the sticker inside your drivers door. It's in Japanese but I think it says 1.8 front and 2.0 kg/cm[3] rear on 185/60/R14's. That's 25.5psi front and 28.5psi rear! And that's with a "60" aspect ratio tyre!

I'm running 26/28 on 205/40/R16's. In fact maybe that's why it doesn't handle very well. I'm going to try dropping the pressures a bit and see if it helps.

Anyone know what it says on a UK spec NA?

sorry tom have edited it as its actually 34 i run and have been most pleased with that and am running 195/50/15s and they are pirelli dragos on some toms alloys and have had no issues at that pressure and am getting very even wear on them and cruises smoothly on the motorway and is very flikable on them ! dont think I have ever run anything lower than 30 and would only go that low for the track ! At these pressures it does enable the back to step out easier as you will have a smaller contact patch but its negliagable really but can be good fun ! If I can find a decent pressure gauge when I get home tonight I will check the pressures and see what they are at as you have me wondering but deffinatly had 34 put in when I had them all changed recently !

Well I was running 20/22 cold pressures on the go-kart at Elvington. Handled really well, but managed to ruin an almost brand new Advan Neova LTS front tyre in one trackday! (That's £118 by the way). Don't think I'll make that mistake again......

Think I was running 24/26 cold on the SC at Anglesey. That was with the shitty big wheels (16") and stoopid wide tyres (205). I may have to run the big wheels again at Anglesey, unless I dare take the worn out Advan AO48R's and risk getting caught.....

Stock pressures are 26/28.

IME the trick is to run 4-6psi higher at the rear than the front. I favour 6 psi difference personally. Its due to the weight difference.

I'm running 26 front and 28 back on my NA at the moment as the book says to, but would be very interested in experimenting  Lauren, can I ask what benefits you find buy running the rear tyres at 4-6psi higher than the front rather than the suggested 2psi? I dare say with your track knowledge you’ll know more about this than most!

In a nutshell less understeer. Get more grip at the front. Also there is obviously more weight at the rear too, so this is a factor too.

Jo, all I can tell you is that you need to go lower than standard, that's all. (I know that's not much help by the way  ) What tyres are they, I can't remember? :?

A bit off topic, but I've just been looking at my Advan tyres to see if I dare drive them to Anglesey for a trackday, where I'll run them down to the canvas (a la Lauren or Ben) and then get them changed. (0.5mm of tread is legal, isn't it? ) Spotted a lovely piece of Jinglish (crap Japanese translation) on the side of the tyre. Don't know if you will be able to read this (at low res) but have a look under the ADVAN-032R embossment.

Image

FOR SPORTY DRIVE, that's just briliant! :D

PS Jo, To contradict myself I'd leave them exactly as we set them: 26/28. Explain why later.....
I think Laurens 24/30 is probably fine for an experienced track driver, but I for one aren't going that way and you shouldn't either! [-X I think 24/30 is more to do with Lauren's driving "stiles".

PPS Where is Llenrub, I REALLY miss him! :D

28 on the rear has been fine and has improved handling (and fun roundabouts) despite sh*tty susp! lower pressure on the front might make the steering too heavy with my phat tyres - as it feels better with 26 than the 22 before re-inflation! but, i may start to experiment a tiny bit - but not with crazy lauren driving sty-lee (need to train up to that level! lol)
