Project : Its not a project MK1b

Post by Samc »

Hi All, I am Sam this is my recently purchased '89 T-bar MK1 Daily driver with 106K on the clock.
Fappin love this car! Recently showed at Goodwood breakfast club soft top Sunday.

Pretty much standard apart from Lockwood backlit blue dials, Mongoose exhaust and whatever those wheels are..
They needed to be changed really, so...
Bought these (have a small obsession with wheels) 14" x7J OZ Ruote Turbos
Image
I work as a metal spinner/machinist so these came to work with me for a refurb and polish.

Have a set of PI lowering springs to be installed with some new droplinks and also picked up a set of these for not too much money.
Image
looking to run MSPNP in the future. Latest thing to be made in this Airbox. will attempt to make the manifold & trumpets also.

Tried sooo hard not to start fiddling but I just couldn't help it! at least I know for sure the exterior body wont be touched

Cheers all will update when something happens next :thumleft:

Wow some good work on the fabrication side, that looks interesting. Can be a bit of a faff to get throttle bodies working though as the short inlet tract creates problems with the MAF sensor IIRC.

Hi & thanks. Have never run ITB's before, however engine will be converted to run MAP sensor so hopefully the MAF problem will not occur. Thanks for the heads up though. :thumleft:

They already have a MAP sensor on the later spec engines.

For a stable vacuum sensor reading and brake booster vacuum you'll need a vacuum manifold like this: http://www.goldeneaglemfg.com/index.php ... Path=78_90

I have the MK1 MAP sensor on my MZ and it gives a nice steady reading on idle even when it's plumbed straight to the throttle bodies. But I guess the 2 extra cylinders help with that.

And when it comes to balancing the ITBs grab one of these: http://www.carbtune.co.uk/ Or you could borrow mine as I'm just round the corner from you in Gosport.

I did not know that! Just been out to spot it, 3 vacuum lines attached to it right on the passenger side to the inlet manifold?

Hhmm the MSPNP has the MAP sensor inbuilt on board already so I guess the stock one can be removed fully then.

This is slightly worrying then from the 4AGE MS website:
1985-1987 Toyota Corolla AE86 with 4AGE
1985-1989 Toyota MR2 with 4AGE
1987-1989 Toyota Corolla FWD models with 4AGE
1985-1990 Toyota Pickup or 4Runner with 22RE
Please note that this one does not match the pinout for JDM 4AGE motors with factory MAP sensor

Cheers for the offer of the borrow will probably take you up on that when needed :D

Nope it's the black box on the rear edge of the engine bay with the grey connector on it. Should have just the one vacuum hose plumbed into it.

If the MS has an inboard MAP sensor then you're good to go on binning the stock one. I had to calibrate the ECU (DTA S80) to my MAP sensor, which was fun.

No probs, I'll give you a hand with the balancing if you like. Gotta be easier than the bloody V6.

By the way what are those throttle bodies off?

They are from a Blacktop AE111 and came complete with the stock manifold with all the gubbins attached.

MMmm V6 must be awesome! Buddy of mine used to have a KLZE MX-3 on ITB's and that thing roared up like a mofo \:D/

Map sensor is the black rectangular box with the grey plug just above the coolant expansion tank

To cut them out I will be using some hole saws then shape everything with a rope sander.

Where did you get them from?

They come undone pretty quickly and then start to squeak.

No I haven't sent them back. I'm putting up with the noise until my other car is fixed at the weekend.

Installed the front springs yesterday. Took my time did it in about 4 hours,
old ARB drop links where toast and needed cutting off anyway. Happy with the drop it has given, only problem now is that the ARB itself is now knocking where everything else is tight again! SuperPro poly bushes on order though for front and rear and should be here by Tuesday.

Quick shot of the underneath while I was there.

Can not wait to get these wheels on so I had to have a little preview!

Rear springs fitted yesterday along with new drop links and ARB bushes. Happy with the subtle drop and the handling feels a lot sharper now and ride quality is brilliant with these PI springs. The wife has now banned me from lowering it any further till I have paid for it lol
