squeaking

i have a very annoying squeaking noise which is more audible when going slowly. No knocking noises when going over bumps but a squeaking sound.

i assumed it was the rear arb but on inspection its fine.

The bounce test produced the same sound eminating from the rear pas side.

i jacked it up and spun the rear pas wheel and although its not rubbing on anything its squeaking like hell!

is this suspension related? I thought originally yes but when jacked up it makes the same noise that appeared on bounce test..

any help?

Yes to the nut but will check tomorrow again.

When I turned wheel by hand sounded like driveshaft was clonking.

If the shock was gone that would comprimise the handling wouldn't it?!

quite possibly as ive had a driveshaft issue for a while.

but at 10mph and less when coming to a stand still sounds like the car is falling to bits at the back

now got a clunking noise but sounds to hollow to be a ball joint

Have you had the rear bearings done?

I had similar issues with a Mk2 (same noise as you and squeaked on the bounce test) and thought it was the bushes. I checked the 30mm driveshaft nut and it had come loose, this in turn ballsed up the bearings I think.

hello mate, yes the bearings have been done.

Well found two problems:

1. Wheel bearing is gunked up inside as took driveshaft, caliper n pads off and it still made a noise. See video. There is absolutely no play in the bearing at all so going to go with it til my other car is fixed.



2. Before I took the driveshaft out I noticed my arb and droplinks made a really bad squeak when I pulled down on them. I bought these from TFS on eBay as he wouldn't sell me some in here! Wish I hadnt now as they were seized!! However I fixed them and now the noise I was experiencing has gone 90% ish. Will pull apart the other side and do that one tomorrow.

If you need some new rose joints they can be easily sourced and replaced.
Better you keep them regularly lubed up.

Mcgill Motorsport is a good source.

Noise sounds like rubber on metal to me.

May be the outer dust cover against the bearing race then.

I wasn't expecting to have to take them off to lube them up as TFS made them sound superior, when they are just xxxx! And it's not the rose joints which need lubing up, it's the actual thread on the studding holding them together.

Maybe I misunderstand what you've written but all the movement should be in the rose joint - the thread should be locked up tight?

Was wondering the same thing.

Shouldn't have to take the joint off to grease it up, most I have seen have a grease nipple. Some rod ends have a nylon insert which is non serviceable.

To be honest they are so cheap they are disposable items so no one really bothers. If your planning to drive the car in all weathers with long service intervals better with sealed joint, like the stock drop links.

It wasn't the joint that was squeaking, its the threaded bar with adjusts it, sounds odd yes.

I have rubber boots over my rose joints.
