un-rusting brake disk

Post by n52 »

Hi Guys,

How can I clean up the rusted hub parts of my brake discs? They don't need to be changed yet so i'd rather clean then up instead of replacing all the disks, or is that the only way? I didn't want to just go ahead and hammerite or something as I can't see a lip on it and didn't want to get it on the disk.

I've never bothered with that to be honest. It's the part of the disc that isn't cleaned by the pads.

In my opinion, just leave it.

Remove disc .....clean the rust off with a hard bristle metal brush or sandpaper... mask off area pads touch.....then some high temp paint i suppose.

Easy way would be remove disk, bung it in a washing up bown of rust remover. Alternatively blast with glass bead or aluminium oxide.

But it will rust again (and again, and again) if not treated/painted.

I know what you mean buddy, it bugs the hell out of me as well.

A wire brush on a drill of better still a dremmel to remove the main rust and then Hammerite whatever colour you want. It shouldn't be affected by temperature and just paint the area where the rust was.

IMO it does make a difference but then I'm a bit OCD in any case. :D

Wire brush on a grinder or electrolysis bath then loosely mask the pad area and spray them with vht paint. Any you get on the pad area will come off as soon as you first brake the same way surface rust does when there left standing

Or you could buy treated discs, I suppose.

I've had a few cars where folks have hammerited those areas and I can vouch how much heat it can take as I tried blow torching it off with little success. Honestly I never saw the point but I'd recommend hammerite (smoothrite) black or silver / grey I guess. One of those few areas where patina looks bang on for me but each to their own! If you got an electrolysis kit then that would be bang on I guess.
