springs

Post by chrismanchr »

Ive still got my original springs but since I replaced the shocks the suspension is all over the show ,it seems stuck up at the front ,I tried apex springs but they were both too low and too soft ,I scraped every speed hump where I live

any recomendations ?

New shocks will raise the ride height a bit. Have you done the alignment after fitting the shocks?

Did you replace the shocks at the rear?

yup kyb shocks all around ,the springs looked ok but I'm begining to wonder the removal and installation procedure was too much for 27year old springs

If they're not broken they should be OK, might be worth checking if they're seated properly. What's actually wrong with the handling?

it feels light at the front and on the motorway it seems to get very light with worryingly light steering

Does it pull to the side at all and is the steering wheel straight?

Where did you get the KYBs from? Any idea what the part numbers are?

I've heard of similar where Carina (I think) KYBs have been supplied and the damper rating is all wrong. :-k

I checked out the part numbers on the kyb website they were correct

I got them from camskill(i think)

but I'm not sure which way to go are the original shocks and springs availible from toyota ? I know new front shocks are available at TCB

or do I go for a full package of somesort ,it needs sorting I attempted it with the kybs and it isnt right ,I'm not a fan of lowered cars though especailly since I live in an area with alot of rough speed humps

How does it corner? I'd expect less body roll with new shocks and possibly lighter steering as a side effect.

I have Koni's and if I stiffen them up the steering does get slightly lighter as the car goes into corners more easily.

it corners well but if you put too much angle on the steering it seems to cause issues feels like the wheel wants to tuck in or under weird

the cars great and this is its only real issue

Any tramlining at all? Sounds a bit like not enough toe in on the front end.

Shocks have exactly zero to do with ride height.

Fensport Springs?

I used them, they were fine, a bit lower, but no problem when running Koni's.

KYB's just IMO are way too stiff.

Changing dampers (They are not shock absorbers!) will have no effect on the ride height.

Did you change the ARB links at the same time by any chance?

it seems the person that was supposed to do a full 4 wheel alightment didnt ,and actually just did the tracking ,I took it to dave sheldons in manchester and he messed around with it ,he said the tracking was spot on but the camber was all over the show with minus camber at the front

its now done and doesnt look like its stuck in the air at the front
and brilliant, got my little go cart back ! lol

Next time, if you want to go somewhere decent go here:

http://www.blinkmotorsport.com

He's got all the gear which makes it quick to do and therefore not that expensive. Mark paid about £70 to get his MX5 setup. It's pretty good value really and the equipment is top notch. :+:

The springs could have been a Japanese aftermarket version, which generally do lower the rear more than the front, but if you had them on previously you should have noticed it then as well. And as stated regular struts have nothing to do with ride height, unless one somehow got seriously jammed and wasn't completely collapsing as normal, which is very unlikely. Don't ask me why almost all Japanese springs lower the rear of the car more, but I am sure they have their reasons. TRD is pretty much the only one that doesn't.
