Which petrol?

Post by TheLepresean »

Whilst I know import '2s have to have higher octane fuel, how much difference is it likely to make to my NA Rev5? Currently I use bog standard Esso fuel (admittedly primarily due to proximity and the Tesco Clubcard points...), but if there were a noticeable difference I wouldn't mind paying the extra few pence per litre for Shell Ultra Supermax or whatever it's called...

use the cheap stuff on a non turbo mate, totally pointless using the expensive stuff. the reason the turbos use the higher octane is to prevent detonation, not something your likely to suffer in a NA car :thumleft:

Oh I know, but I vaguely recall an episode of Fifth/Top Gear (before they both became ridiculous crash fests) looking into the effects - using cheap fuel on a range of cars, dynoing them, then using fancy fuel and dynoing them again; and I'm sure, whilst the more boring cars it made no difference to, the sportier faster cars (an Impreza among them, IIRC) saw gain of a fair few bhp?

VBH did it with a Golf GTI in a fairly recent fifth gear. IIRC it saw a gain of about 4-5bhp with the shell high octane. But being a new car I doubt you could draw much on a comparison.

I've heard its ok at keeping your internals nice and clean (injectors etc) but I don't know if this has any truth in it.

That being said I do use it from time to time when I have coupons ;)

For what it's worth I tend to redex occasionally too and I've noticed improvements :)

Hmm ok, might take mine to BP/Shell when I'm feeling extra rich one day...

Regarding Redex, I've seen it in Halfords etc... is it actually worthwhile doing then? Do you put it in with the petrol? Isn't it meant to clean out carbon deposits or something?

It's primarily an injector cleaner I believe.

I'm sure people will say otherwise but when I first got my two it was obvious it hadn't been terribly well cared for in the two years previous (full history up to 2010, purchased 2012). It ran fine, but a few tell tale signs such as the need for new plugs, dirty oil etc we're good indications. Thankfully it hadn't covered many miles in those two years.

As always with a new (old) car I added redex to a full tank of fuel. I found my throttle response a lot sharper and it just seemed to idle a little better. It smokes on redex, but as long as it isn't smoking before or after you know your ok.

That's just my two pence. And before the nay Sayers start I believe Jason Plato did a very good dyno test using redex on an old VW Corrado and he saw improvements of about 7bhp after use. And about 3bhp following a good service. So my routine is regular servicing and occasional redex (once a year).

I usually throw redex in a full tank on both cars twice a year

in the mr2 I used sainsburys 97 - nectar points and friendlier to the knock sensor

I have to admit, a bit of Googling comes back with quite a lot of "naysayers"... and some people saying it actually damaged their engine!! :/

Ah, thanks Rik. Unfortunately there are no Sainsbury's with a petrol station anywhere near me, though I might have to go looking. BP fuel gains you nectar points as well. Do you know if your Dad used to Redex my car?

the reason imprezas and gtis would see gains is because they are turbo, they'd be detecting less knock (or no knock) so the ecu would adjust the timing accordingly (as it would detect knock with cheap fuel), hence giving more power :thumleft:

Avoid using supermarket fuel, i used it when i first got my golf v6 3months ago and the engine light kept coming on, afr sensor was showing as a code.. For a week or 2 i tried shell normal stuff, Unbelievably the light went away and stayed away til i tested supermarket fuel again, came back after half a mile! I dont think high octane will make a huge difference on an na though.
Just my 2 cents

On any MR2, I'd use premium fuel - Tesco 99, Shell V-Power, BP ultimate....

But that's just me.

Ideally only the best for mine too... just didn't want to go spending extra money for no real gain/improvement. Maybe I'll just go for a tank of premium every few tanks, see if I notice anything. Thanks for the help :)

As an example, when new my rav4 would do 295-298 on a tank according to the fuel computer.

After using the cheapest supermarket for about 6 months my mileage dropped to 235 or so!

Then switching back to Tesco 99 Ron petrol and get 285-295 on a tank.

So it benefits normal cars too :thumleft:

Fuel

Post by cosmos »

Nissan 300zx owners steer clear of Tesco 99 something to do with ethernol and high cylinder temps, and higher fuel line pressures.
