[Mk2] [Turbo] Rev 2 gearbox crunch

Post by markstevieandmads »

Hi
I notice I occasionally get a crunch from 3rd to 4th when giving it some beans. It doesn't do it when driven "normally".
Could this just be an adjustment is needed?
Im also planning on replacing the box oil (see other thread).

Its got an ebay short shifter on it too.

If it needs adjusting, can u tell me how this is done.

Thanks

There is no "adjustment" possible.

It'll most likely be a synchro ring wearing. Certain oils can make the gearbox feel more consistent, but no oil will repair mechanical wear or faults.

Which can often make the situation worse.

I had the same problem & it eventually gave up at santa pod & started crunching every time I went from 3rd to 4th. It's a rebuild I'm afraid 4th gear synchro needs replacing, or get a rev 3 gearbox as it has stronger sychro's in the first place. I'm sure Peter can sort you out with a refurb if required I'd have had mine done but Barnsley is a bit of a mission from Birmingham :thumleft: Maybe I should relocate :-k

how much would I be looking at for a remove ,refurb and replace?
Im running standard power and wouldn't be upping the power more than a uprated intercooler, ct20b and possibly metal headgasket eventually.

Make sure you by a good box from a known reliable source - I know just how much internals for the box can cost and it gets expensive.

I would be trying things that are worth while doing even with a new gearbox, so won't be a waste of time/money.

Clutch adjustment (on the clutch pedal).
Bushes on selection forks
Rotating block in said fork area
Going back to oem gear shifter
Gearbox oil (this is worth a try anyhow, but will obviously get lost if you do go down replacement route).

All of these things can vastly improve gearbox feel.
