4AGE 16v Cam Gears, Valve springs, Cams
I have got some HKS 264 8.1mm camshafts. They are same spec as tomei poncams like "bolt on". So do I need to change valve springs or something in valve train? Can stock cam gears been used or should I buy some adj. cam gears?

Re: 4AGE 16v Cam Gears, Valve springs, Cams
I'm installing 272 duration Newman cams with similar lift and I'm staying with stock valve springs. Generally opinions vary on what is the max lift you can run on stock springs but it seems to be around 8-8.5mm. The spec sheet for mine said it would be OK, so that's what I'm going with!
I have however bought adjustable cam gears so that I can get everything set up properly. I'm running carbs and aftermarket ecu for ignition so thought I might as well get everything for the optimal set up. Interested to see what playing with the cam timings does to the power curve on the dyno, but that's probably not gonna be until April when I get some time off. If your still building I'll be happy to share my results.

I have HKS 264/256 cams with 8.1mm lift in my AE86. They are absolutely fine on stock valve springs.
Better to buy vernier wheels, I have HKS ones. As that way it's a doddle to adjust the timing.

Good to know that original valve spring works . Lauren how your engine runs on when cam gears are neutral (0 degrees)?

Tbh I can't remember what they run at, but I don't run them at zero. There's a thread somewhat about this as Vashy had the same setup.

Here's the thread to read:
http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... ks+vernier
My settings:
Okay done the cam timing as per John's.
Mine was originally set at -3 inlet and -4 exhaust.
Now set it to -5 inlet and -7 exhaust.
Is dead easy to do on my HKS cam wheels.
Results are perhaps somewhat qualitative, but the car undoubtedly goes well revving strongly to the limiter as one might expect with the spec of cams (the power range is to 8300rpm).

I'm running 8.5/9.0mm lift cams on standard valve springs.
I had to swap my shims around to get them all in tolerance.
You'll have to check them all.

No difference just use standard ones.

Aren't those just standard cam gears that have been slotted and hks timing wheels inserted? Very common to do it that way in Japan and work fine, I think from the time before full aftermarket cam gears were easily available.

If you don't want to spend a load of money on HKS cam gears, you could look at these. £60 and they do exactly the same as £250 HKS gears.

I bought them and here is what they look like out of the box:

Re: 4AGE 16v Cam Gears, Valve springs, Cams
Some friends told me to use hks because cheap cam gears wear out.
Re: 4AGE 16v Cam Gears, Valve springs, Cams
This case can be on in life time?
Re: 4AGE 16v Cam Gears, Valve springs, Cams
that case with worn HKS gears is some 5 years old but can still be found on the interwebs. if it's of any concern now, i don't know. for new gears, probably not. for second hand ones, I would be careful. therefore my thinking is, try ebay specials and if they last, keep them. if not, get something better (my bet is on fidanza or toda here). some people can't even chceck oil level so if you just want to forget everything after it is set, skip the first advice
Re: 4AGE 16v Cam Gears, Valve springs, Cams
Ok. I have been reading that hks cam gears are eating timing belts like this:
http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showth ... belt-Eater!
So when buying some cam gears is it necessary buy kevlar timing belt?
