[Mk2] [Turbo] Major Coolant Leak!

Post by Mike »

So, last night I decided to drive the mr2 back to work (140 miles) for the first time since Christmas, and it developed a sudden coolant leak that I luckily noticed before the engine overheated.

The leak looks to be coming from somewhere near the exhaust manifold, it cant be seen from above or below. I know its a long shot but anyone have any ideas what it might be?

I pretty much had the engine rebuilt last year and the sills will need doing this year, so I'm hoping its a simple fix otherwise I'm gonna have to cut my losses, this car has had so many chances!

Cheers guys.

Near the exhaust manifold - could it be the hose from hell or its brother.

HFH - Coolant Bypass 6
HFHOE - Coolant Bypass 5

They tend to wear out after twenty years and burst - spraying coolant everywhere. If you have an OEM Turbo thats never been off - its a pain to change.

Not expensive for the parts - £30 or so - but they will take an age to replace.

This guide tells you how to sort

I had the hoses from hell replaced in 2009 by 3S so I assumed they were ok. I suppose its possible that they replaced one but not the other......would seem odd though.

The other one to think about that I had is the coolant bypass pipes themselves - if the o-ring that goes into the tstat housing is worn OR any of the bolts that hold the bypass pip on are loose - it will leak from the tstat housing.

Also check the heater matrix return hose - the one that has a metal pipe that goes over the starter motor and has a hose attached to it that then passes behind the exhaust heat shield- remove your air filter for easier access. If it's that it's an easy fix (compared to HFH!)

Just to update this thread, it was indeed the no.6 coolant bypass hose, the one that should be heat wrapped except mine wasn't thanks to a so called mr2 specialist who replaced the hose 4 years ago.

Anyway was replaced by Fensport who managed to change it within a couple of hours so the shock to the wallet I was expecting didn't materialise. Just hope that's it sorted now.

Is there a how to for hose from hells brother? HFHOE - Coolant Bypass 5
I am trying to replace hose from hell and hose from hell 2 right now as we speak and I am looking for a way to do bypass pipe number 5 and just looking at it it looks like I will have to pull the water pump or drop my a/c pump to get at it. Any helpful suggestions greatly received.
Cheers

Very interesting... I've had a very similar failure with work done by them. For no good reason they replaced the solid metal oil return from my turbo with unprotected rubber hose. The first time I took the car on a long motorway journey the thing melted and sprayed the engine oil all over my block. They botched the repair on that with more rubber hose and some form of metal foil "heat protection" which also failed a couple of months later, leaving me without oil while driving up the M1. #-o

I won't even start on how they thought you should connect a boost controller to a standard CT20b actuator

Interesting reading these accounts - I had done work done by them about five years ago - they replaced my rear wireing loom but made a real botch job of it, clearly very rushed so I redid their work. I was moving out of the area at the time so was too busy to bother complaining but I have to say my experience of their work was not good. I though it was a one off but perhaps not...
