TeeBar help?

Post by StealthSteve »

Morning all, not been on in a little while (been too busy enjoying it!)

But last week was unkind to me, i threw the car head first into a nasty bump with a pickup truck.

The basics are that I want to be sure how viable it is to keep on the road, it's sat at an impound until the insurance sorts out, but the guy over the phone tells me: "the radiators gone, front bumpers gone, wings are crushed back to the struts but wheels are straight and and it all moves freely"

There was no water under it when it was towed off, so part of me suspects the Rad's been slightly relocated to the front splitter area?

How do my chances of fixing front inner wings fair?

I don't really want to be the cause of a mint Tbar death other than than, everything past the front wheel hubs was MOT fresh...

Better pics might help, but looking how far back the damage goes, I wouldn't consider repairing that, personally. The damage has certainly crumpled the chassis itself so a repair would involve a pretty hefty pull and jog to get that right again :(

Sorry... I know how gutting it is to lose an MR2

If the slam panel (panel where frunk catch mounts) or inner wings is/are damaged, it's not worth repairing.

:(

I'd be very suprised if the chassis wasn't bent behind the bumper/wings.
Only way to be sure is to remove bonnet/bumper/wings and check chassis.

Think you'd be much better off buying another MR2 in my honest opinion.

You wanna be more constructive?

If it's just the wings/bumper what's the issue?

Obviously if it's mashed the front legs up then yeah it's a no but otherwise?

But it's clearly not just a bumper and a pair of wings. It looks pretty obvious that the monocoque chassis has been impacted. Besides, you also need a new radiator, headlights, bonnet, undertrays etc... but it's the crumpled chassis that will write the car off. I admire your optimism but it's just not realistic I'm afraid.

It's had a heavy front ender, wings, bonnet, lights, slam panel, most likely frunk floor, inner wings, suspension.. I certainly wouldn't put that back on the road and without meaning to be rude I think you're a little insane for even considering spending money fixing it.

An insurer will definitely write it off, Cat B or even A.

It's fecked, buy another one..

I think Ollie is suggesting, admittedly in an abbreviated form, that in his opinion, and 8000 posts of experience with these cars, that the front panel and inner wings are most likely damaged, and as i alluded to, that it is not worth repairing.

I "get my hands dirty" on these cars every day, but would not attempt a repair on that scale on an £800-£1200 car. Unless of course the customer slapped £1000 on the table to have the front end jigged. Then i might consider it.

To be fair it was a sub 30..

I'm not 100% sure how these are bolted together - and yeah it'll need a whole front end but that's what I'm asking, in all seriousness, if by chance the floor and chassis are still holding on I was asking if it's viable and the effort involved, wasn't saying I was going to rebuild a death trap :( It held up this time, I'm aware it probably wouldn't the next.

I'd be fine getting another, but hadn't seen many in that colour and didn't want to sign off on killing a beautiful classic if there was a way round it.

It's a green/blue type job, are they common or not so?

Sorry that`s not constructive. But that car is clearly a write off. It will cost thousands to repair. Once repaired I bet it would never handle the same even if it could be made good. Not a good idea to try and save it and not viable. Buy a new one, maybe if you can keep the scrap one and take good bits off it and sell them, but who cares what colour it was when it`s in that state? You could buy another MR2 and respray it to whatever colour you want and it would cost less than sorting that mangled wreck and you wouldn't have a cat c or whatever it gets classed as, you would have a good car.
