[Mk2] [Turbo] Error Code #52 JDM Rev 2 Turbo

Post by nytrus90 »

Hey

So I finally fixed all the problems in my previous posts, (No Dash lights - ECU-IG kept blowing (was the Fan Relay/ECU) and getting the car started (Had to replace ECU, coil and ignitor)), It was time to take it down for an MOT.

On my way down to the test center my engine management light came on.... great... but does not come on when you let the car idle.

the light instantly comes on when you hit about 1.2k revs, turn the engine off and on again and its gone, repeat and its back.

Now the car drives really smoothly and I can not hear any loud knocking or banging coming from the engine bay.

So here is the information I have collected so far from other people who had this issue:

Water in the intercooler - This may be very possible, When I bought the car the boot was flooded, it smelt damp ect, now my question for this is what is the best way of removing water from the intercooler? Do I literally have to pull the whole intercooler out and tip it upside down or is there a "drain plug" or something I could do instead to remove the water?

Defected Knock Senor - this is my first go to place for the issue, Ive been told that the Knock Senor is very trouble some and have a tendency to fail.

Defected Air Flow Meter - I read somewhere that someone was getting error 52 and it was their AFM that was causing the problem, Why do I think mine is defected? Well I am very new to MR2's and I am learning the ropes still and I unfortunately made the "nooby" mistake of removing the AFM plug via the little screws on the side, yes I know, none of the little wires broke and all went back on the right terminals but ive been told that once open, you create open circuits and thus goosing your AFM :(.

This is what Ive manage to find out so far, if anyone has any advice on finding the culprit it be greatly appreciated.

Knock sensors rarely fail. They can get damaged by backfires from non-standard exhausts.

Error code 52 is knock sensor. Check it's plugged in. If it is, time for a new one.

How hard are they to remove?

Is it Best to try to remove it from the top or the bottom?

Best way to get at it is from the bottom, loads of room which makes a change.

How would you go about testing the wire for any defects?

Check continuity end-to-end with an ohmeter (DVM)

Update:

Replaced the knock sensor, torque it to 37NM and now the error has gone and the car is no longer retarded.

Now on to my next problem.... just found out the my Hose from Hell is leaking.... :(.
